Post by Jhirsch921 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 3:07 pm

I have had the crabs for almost 2 months. I don’t know breeds yet but would love input on the crabitat. I have a 50/50 eco earth/hermit sand. Im currently trying to find more shells for them.i have a bowl of saltwater and a bowl of freshwater. ImageImageImage

The substrate should be a little deeper. About three times the height of your largest crab.

Im pretty sure its supposed to be a 5:1 ratio of ee to sand. But I use all eco earth and it doesn't seem to bother them at all.

You can add those until it's the right height and not add any more sand.

Welcome! Your substrate should be a minimum of 6 inches or 3 times the height of your largest crab. Whichever is deeper wins. Sand keeps its shape better and it's cheaper than all ee. A 50lb bag is less than $5. It also has to be sandcastle consistancy, mixed with dechlorinated fresh or salt water. What dechlorinator are you using? The most recommended is Prime. And Instant Ocean for saltwater. The pools need to be deep enough for them to fully submerge with a safe way in and out. Do you have a thermometer and hygrometer? It's very important to know the temp and humidity. Digital is more accurite than analog. Is your lid completely sealed to keep in humidity? Those are the basics.

If you look at the pictures subcategory, you cN find inspiration for a variety of climbing things. Use plastic items are fine, which is usually how second levels usually gets made. Cholla wood highly recommended. If you feel like diy, anything nlnit/made into a net, etc is liked as well.

When you say 'hermit sand'...what exactly do you mean? There are types of sand that are marketed for hermit crabs that are not safe. Play sand (sold at hardware stores for under $10 for a 50lb bag) is the type of sand that is needed.
What brand of dechlorinator and salt are you using?
Do you have a thermometer / hygrometer?

I use the hermit crab bottle salt water and use typical fish dechlorinator.
