New to it all.
New to it all.
I am new to this site and being a delighted crab mom. I never thought I'd have a Hermit Crab for a pet. Not that they aren't fascinating and wonderful creatures, because they are. I just don't think they are domesticated pets.
I work on the beach in animals services and noticed a couple taking pictures in the hot, white sand near a walkover among too much human foot traffic. They didn't even know what they had found. One very large Hermit Crab. Apparently someone set it free. The only thing I knew about Hermit Crabs was that the beach store sold them. Within the hour I got educated. Thanks to the ladies at the beach store, my vet assistant daughter and the internet I did not make the mistake of putting him in the Gulf of Mexico.
As I learned more about my new friend I realized he needed a friend. So, I bought him a buddy. It's been 4 months now, we've had 1 shell change and 1 shedding.
I have already learned so much here on this site. My boys, ( or at least I think they're boys ), hope I learn even more.

Welcome to the HCA! and crabbing! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
What tank size do you have? How much substrate? How about humidity and heat?
I hope your crab's molt goes well! I don't mean to offend by asking questions. I just want to understand more of the tank setup!

Welcome to crabbing and to the HCA! If you haven't already, be sure to check the 'files' section for tons of info. And feel free to ask questions, if you have any.
PS - There is info on sexing your crabs in the files, if you are interested. I have never bothered with mine, LOL.

That’s so cool you took him in and got him a tank mate! You’re in a great place with the HCA. They have lots of info in their care sheets and everyone is really helpful when you need it, welcome!!

Re: New to it all.
Welcome! I'm semi new as well. Just got mine at the beginning of July.
I've seen a bunch of similar stories on reddit that have turned out to be marine hermit crabs that had wandered on shore instead of land hermit crabs that were released. I'd recommend making sure it's a land hermit crab as most of the advice on this forum is for land hermit crabs. I'm sure if you post some pics, someone here could help identify.

Welcome!!! You are totally in the right place for top of the line information... before I actually joined, I had my Hermie’s already, but lurked around for all the info I needed to give them the best life possible!!!
Good luck with your new friends!! Post a pic or 2 when you get a chance! I don’t have any jumbo (really big) crabs, so I always love seeing the big guys/gals!!

Thanks everybody. I will have to work on the picture thing, I'm not very good with technology.
