So, I discovered the wonders of hermit crabs today. I'm a snail person, I run a snail website, my bedroom is full of snails, I'm really big on snails. Garden snails, african snails, carnivorous snails, button snails, elderly snails, I love snails. I currently own 5 shoeboxes of aspersums, five giant african snails and a tank of leopard slugs (and a pair of tarantulas), and I thought I'd like to expand outwards. I've seen them for sale plenty of times, but I had no idea how absolutely adorable they are. Honestly, the social species part sold me instantly. And when I found out people neglect the precious little things, I couldn't resist. I have a real soft spot for unpopular animals.
Of course since I just started reading about them today I don't have any, or even anything set up, but now I'd love to. And what do you know, my family loves them! I was initially going to purchase a pair, but then I found out that there's a great many in need of rehoming, and if I can obtain some locally, that's much better. I'm amazed I never took note of them before, I was probably too absorbed in my snailing. I'm hoping that once I've had enough hands-on experience, I can start helping other people with their crabs and eventually I want to have a personal sanctuary for unwanted snails, and now crabs.
Well, I guess that's it. I also like woodlice, they have the most ridiculous behaviors and daily routines. I'm so excited to get into keeping crabs, they sound like lovely critters and everyone in the household finding them fascinating is a huge bonus. Pretty handy I already have a crawling heap of snails, there's never not enough tanks or food around!

Re: New to Crabs
Hello!
You are an amazing person! I too love unwanted/disliked creatures. I love hermit crabs, and this is a great place to get great hermit crab information from experienced people.
I have always loved snails, never thought to have them as pets though
I know there is a care sheet for hermit crabs, but I don't know how to link it, hopefully someone will save me and post a link to it
Hope you have a fun journey with hermit crabs, welcome to the Hermit Crab Association
Best of luck,
Bonnie

Good for you, Crucifigo! Less popular species need love, too
. I've always been a snail person myself (lots of little figurines, stuffed snails, garden items, etc) and had a few apple snails in an aquarium a few years back.
