Potential crab owner.

Post by nepenthes » Fri Nov 13, 2015 3:05 pm

Hi everyone! My name is Alma and I've been thinking about hermit crabs for quite a while. I'm currently a crazy tortoise owner with four redfoot tortoises, which I love dearly. I've been on this site for a few days now trying to research what I need to know before jumping the gun. A big thanks to everyone that has contributed to the wealth of knowledge on this forum. It's been pretty fun reading up on hermit crabs and hopefully, one day, I can say that I have 20 year old hermit crabs and redfoot tortoises.

Glad to see that you're doing your research beforehand. As you've been able to tell, hermit crabs are both easy and difficult to care for. The hard part, at least dollar-wise, is the initial set-up of tank, lid, UTH, substrate, pools, thermometer/hygrometer, lighting (if desired), decor -- all before any crabs pass through your door  ! Once the crabitat is up and running, crabs have been added and the temperature and humidity levels are stable, you'll then find yourself 1) mesmerized by the simplest things the crabs do, 2) looking at ordinary household items/knick knacks/etc., to see if they can be repurposed for the crabs and 3) start thinking about larger tanks for more crabs!

Thanks for the welcomes! I think I'm pretty thorough when it comes to pet research. I'm taking my time putting things together while looking at pretty pictures of crabs that I can't wait to get. Luckily, conditions are somewhat the same as my tortoises so I think these future hermits will be good to go.

Looking forward to becoming a normal on here :D
