I really hate Petland.

So, I went to Petland today, where we all know they have a massive open "tank" with an inch of coco fiber on the bottom. horrible!!! anyways, my first thought was the large African Grey parrot standing on the side of their tank!! uhhhhhh, can someone explain why the parrot is kept next to the crabs....?
second, there were two children "playing" with the crabs. by that I mean shaking, tossing, and poking and prodding the crabs. after numerous, "hey, be careful's," I had to back away before I had a break down.

LONGISH STORY SHORT. After explaining my hermit crab set up and enthusiasm, and asking if they could cut any discount knowing they were going to a good home, I went home with two new babies. ️ I wanted four. but.... I didn't have $45 to chalk up. and they, of course, wouldn't give me the discount

update on them: Peach has been submerged in the salt water since since I put her in the tank, and Lazlo joined her for a drink, but is really just grubbing on some coconut and shrimp!

I'm glad you rescued these babies! I'm sure they'll be much happier with you. Just keep in mind that buying from awful pet stores gives them money & supports how they keep the crabs. You save a couple, but you contribute to putting many more in that position. I agree with your complaints on the conditions though. The last Petland I went into, I had to leave the store before I started crying because they refused to do anything to change their set up.

I agree that peatland is a horrible pet store. Not only for there lack of care of the hermit crabs but the bad conditions of all the animals. I've stopped going to pet lands altogether because the one I went to near my home is a nightmare. They have a tortoise that roams the store, and it had some sort of an eye infection. Puss oozing fro. It's eye, when I spoke to the manager he blew me off. And the hermits were in the same conditions of the store your speaking of, except that crab bodies and loose legs were scattered all over the tank as though some bloody war took place in the tank. Once again I was blew off when trying to discuss proper hermit crab care, and that anyone who loves crabs like I do would be upset to see all the dead crabs. I even tried to be polite and pleasant when inside I was upset. I tried to contact there main office with my concern and once again was blown off. I refuse to shop there for anything. It's sad that they do not care for there animals.

The nearest pet land to me is Quincy, Il. They have stepped up. A little better conditions..I think there is only one pet shop now in macomb, Illinois that sells crabs now and she was trying to pass them as large..they were like nickel size. They had gravel, sponge, no water.. I just made loud rude comments about the tank conditions..If the PEOPLE that worked there couldn't hear me then they were deaf..

Our Petland got so bad that they dumped the franchise and he reopened under a new name....

How do they charge $45 for four hermit crabs???!!! The hermits at my pet store are $5 each.

Some of our local shops do that, but in some areas they want $10-$15 each. Our Petsmart charges nearly $10 for "fancy shells", which is basically any shell in the tank. :roll:
