Hi there, everybody!

Post by Prolix33 » Tue Oct 21, 2014 4:52 pm

Hello, everyone! Call me Prolix, or Pro. I've had hermit crabs before, back when I was in middle school, but I now realize I was doing nothing right and that's probably why they died. I'm hoping this time I'll do it right! :)

I really love Ecuadorians. Their eyes are too gosh darn cute!

While I don't have any crabs of my own at the moment, I should be getting some in the near future.

So... I do have a few questions...
Should I have more sand or more Eco-Earth type substrate?
Is pellet food alright to feed as well as fresh food?
Should I get one crab or two?
:crabblush:
I can't wait to learn all I can! This should be fun!
Soon-to-be hermie mommy!

I dont have any Ecuadorian s but I believe the standard is the same..
1) a mix of eco earth playsand 5:1 or playcastle consistancy
2) I believe pellet is okay as long as its natural as possible , no artifical s or preservatives..most like to feed fresh, have calicum
3) if you can get 2..so they wont be lonely:smile:

Hi, welcome to the HCA! If you haven't already found it, the Caresheet section is full of loads of information. Worth taking the time to read through. http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 0a6f9b051a.
In my opinion, a mix of play sand and cocofiber is the way to go. It makes for better tunneling than just play sand or just cocofiber alone. Many recommend a 5:1 ratio but I just wing it, keeping it more sand than cocofiber. You'll want it at least 3x the height of your largest crab or 6 inches deep, which ever is more, and moistened to sand castle consistency.
In the section I linked, you'll find an article on commercial foods. Take a look at that before deciding whether or not you want to offer those and if so, what kinds. Most crabbers choose to feed fresh and there's also articles in that section on safe foods, hermit crab nutrition, and unsafe foods. Even if you do settle on a safe commercial food it is best to also provide them with fresh foods.
If you have the space it's always best to get your crab at least one species buddy.

Forget pellet! Providing your homemade treats is part of that crabbing magic Explore the Foods section for some information and ideas. Pellet food will mean nothing to you after that!
