Aussie?

Post by 7dwarfs » Thu Apr 30, 2015 11:58 am

Hi everyone, I've had my crabs for almost 4 years, thanks to all the great advice I got here when I first started. I just made a new account because I couldn't remember the old account info, and haven't been very active on here since I started college. I have 4 pp that I love dearly, and my birthday was yesterday. I got a 40 gallon tank at petco (it was the biggest size left with the dollar per gallon sale) from my mom and plan on combining it with my 20 and 2 10's over the summer to make one big tank. I really want to try exotics and I've been thinking about getting 2 or 3 aussie's, but I don't see a whole lot of information on them. For those of you who have community tanks do you keep aussie's in your community tanks or do they do better seperately? Also, (not trying to start an argument) I did see the old thread with the debate over SW for aussie's, but noticed it was from 2010, and that the care sheet didn't comment on that, do those of you who offer SW and FW all the time have issues? Do you like your Aussie's compared to other exotics like straws or ruggies? Do they get along well with PP like straws do?

There were only a handful of people who got aussies back when they were imported one time in 2010. The one woman I know of who still has hers has it in a community tank with every other species available. She is the only known long-time owner of Aussies in the US. This new batch of Aussies just arrived a couple of months ago, with no shipments to the US in between, so no one else in North America has first hand experience with them past that. In Australia where Aussies come from there are no other species available aside from the lucky few who have found Straws, so they have to stick to single species tanks there. It's new ground to have mixed species tanks with them.

The is the caresheet that was primarily written by the woman who has successfully bred and raised babies - one of only a handful of people in the entire world who has done this for any species. They do need saltwater the same as every other species. The once a week suggestion was a myth created by the exporter to make them seem more appealing and easy for people to care for. :( https://www.facebook.com/notes/hca-herm ... 8835777055 (You should be able to see this, if not, let me know and I'll PM you a copy!)

Thanks! I do remember when someone (I thought possibly you) posted pictures here of attempting to breed in America my senior year of high school, it's amazing anyone's ever been successful with breeding thank you for all the info:)
