New on the HCA

Post by Krusty Krab » Sun Feb 21, 2016 8:23 pm

Hello my name is Chloe and I am new to the HCA. I have 2 hermit
Crabs. Carlton was given to me for free at the boardwalk. ( a little girl was scared of
Him) he was in a painted shell, being shook around in a KK. My folks aren't
Too fond of pets, but got him anyways. My sisters loved him.
(But got sick of him 1 day later) I did research on them and was confused
There were so many opinions on them. It took my folks a long time to get
A ten gal tank and supplies. But I convinced them. It took even longer to get him a buddy
Named Ceisil (from pet smart) she had no tips on her legs. No salt water. And improper nutrients.
She was dull in color. Now they have molted beautifully. Ceisil has her tips back.
They were both in need of a molt. I try to improve and spoil my babies.
Now only if I could get a 20 gal........
PS can't upload pictures

Welcome to HCA and the Wonderful World of Crabbing! Glad to hear that the crabs adjusted to their new home and have both undergone successful molts :D . We all want to see your crabbie kids so check out the link entitled How to Upload and Post Pictures and Avatars. If the link below doesn't work, the topic is found in General Topics--Pictures.

Welcome to HCA!
I understand your frustration! I had hermit crabs all throughout my childhood and it was really hard for me to convince the adults that hermit crabs were just as important as all our other pets and that they needed specific things to live.
Having two hermit crabs in a 10 gallon should be plenty for them. How big are they? I would hold off on the 20 gallon until you have 20 bucks to spend and buy the tanks at Petco when they go on the dollar per gallon sale.
You said that they both have molted, congratulations! Sounds like they have settled in pretty well in their new home and you are providing them everything they need!
7 PP Hermies I think? Lost count tbh 5 PPs and 2 Es

The first one I Carlton the other one is Ceisil. Ceisil is medium. Carlton is Medium/large. I know that a 20 gal is too big, but it's on my wish list!!!!!

They're so cute and I love their names!

A 20g isn't too large, considering how fast they can grow with each molt. I would suggest getting a 20L rather than a 20g: at 30" long, the 6" added length gives you more room for deeper pools and more decor while offering the crabs more space for tunneling. I have a 29g, the same footprint as a 20L but 6" taller -- the added height allows for a good deep substrate while still providing ample space above ground for decor, climbing features, etc. As @Kaleighshermies suggested, watch for Petco's $1-a-gallon sale, held about 4x a year; during the sale, you can get either a 20g or 20L for $20 and a 29g for $29, more than 50% the normal prices!
