New member. Previous owner with new crabs

Post by carpenoctem » Wed Aug 03, 2016 2:02 pm

Hello all

About 12-15 years ago I owned a few crabs. never researched and they passed away along with the replacement ones. no humidity or salt water...... i was young and irresponsible.

Recently I bought 3 new crabs and everything needed to start them out in a new home. They're healthy and happy from what I can tell as all three burrowed began molting in the first two weeks before I was honestly ready for a multi molt. humidity from eco bedding and temp (currently. Winter I have to work on) proper water and food, shells, places to climb and hide etc. I'll be upgrading tanks as I bought a 10 and wish I had bought a 30 as it'd fit the table they are on.

as for the crabs I have
  • Spartacus medium almost large PP (my most active and fearless crab)
Wembly medium PP (Complete coward, closes up as you walk past the tank)
Boober small PP (only surfaces to eat and drink at night since shortly after the moult)
After I get a larger tank I intend to get a strawberry, a blueberry and an E for Red, Mokey, and GOBO to finish off the fraggle rock lineup. (for those who know what i'm talking about)

I do have a question on lighting. it's 77 inside the house and in the tank is roughly the same and the tank gauges I got show temp and humidity are good so I haven't done any lights yet. I know they ll need them in winter as the house will be colder. Do I need day and night lamps? they get indirect natural light to see but for warmth I dont know...

Hey! Loving the FR names.

Check out all the care guides and the file on heating.

I would suggest a UTH heater applied to the back of the tank to bring your temps up to at least 80.

Exotics have slightly different care requirements and all crabs need a species buddy.

Blueberries are almost impossible to get in the U.S. because Okinawan blues are not allowed to be exported from Japan. Blues from Indonesia may be able to be exported but they aren't very often. I know maybe 2 people with actual blues.

Welcome! Read the guides, search for info you want to find in threads and we hope to see pics of your crabs soon!

Figured since two got added to my family due to a pet stores bad conditions,I'd add photos. Have the whole Fraggle crew now. The pics don't do justice on size. I have pretty large hands.

Gobo (formerly Sparticus) wouldn't hold still for a pic

Beautiful crabbies! Love the pics!

Soilentgringa, did you hear that the blueberries from Indonesia are in fact regarded as a seperate species, C.lila?

I know they recently discovered that c. Lila was a new species, but didn't remember if it was considered a blueberry beforehand. I think it is on Tony Coenobitas page.
