I picked up a new big 'un tonight!

Post by mool » Mon Jan 16, 2017 10:25 pm

I responded to a CL ad that was rehoming a single crab. Apparently this young woman was given the crab as a heartfelt gift from her sibling, who is a young child. After researching the care requirements, she opted to rehome.

The crab is pretty big, a large or an extra large. It was in an 6"x8" critter keeper with 1/8" of calcium sand and a capful of water. In spite of this, it seems to be in good shape and has recently molted.

It changed out of the painted shell about 5 minutes after I put it in. Right now, it's posturing and trying to knock the jumbos around. They've all knocked each other off the climbing structures. No chirping or noise of any kind other than the shells clanking when they fall. Hopefully they will all settle down soon.

I took a couple of snaps of the dude right before and after the shell change, but missed the change.

I love a shell change, especially when its covered with paint! Congrats on the easy and successful shell change!

BTW, your crabitat looks so nice and clean!

This guy/gal could not wait to get out of that shell. Prior to picking him up, I rinsed out all of my existing shells except for one. Guess which one he picked? Yep, the one I didn't rinse!

It's funny that you say my tat looks clean, thanks for that, but I never ever spot clean or do any messing around in the tank except to change food and water. I do have about 250 isopods in there, so maybe they are doing what they are supposed to!

This morning, I couldn't find Spidey so he must have dug under after wrecking the tank all night! I usually don't name my crabs but this one is Spidey until I forget that I named him. :innocent:

Thank you! Now that I've added another large crab, I need to upgrade to at least a 75 gallon...

What did I get myself into. Sigh.

❤ He appears to be a very good crab. I like his colouring.
Congrats on your new addition!

Thank you! He's been spending most of his days digging, eating and changing shells. He's currently sporting the striped fox shell in the foreground of pic #3. He is the only crab I've ever had to take up that shell. There is a lot of clanking around now because he's about 6" wide in that thing!!

What is that wood piece in the background of the third picture. I love how it looks.

On the left side of the picture, it's grape vine wood; to the right (behind the cuttle bone) is a cork round.
