Crab Introduction!

Post by Shaddeh » Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:03 am

Hello!!

Figured I'd been stalking this forum since August it might as well be time for me to introduce myself! My name is Shaddeh! I'm a proud first time owner of Hermit Crabs, well, A hermit crab now as my little one passed away last night! I'm sad, but it doesn't surprise me, the way I got them was not the best of situations, and I quickly learned how stressful being shipped in the mail can be!

On to the introductions!

Below you will have 4 links, all for my big boy (not sure if he's really a male or not, haven't been able to gender him yet!), who I named Purple People Eater as he's a PP :D My buying him was COMPLETELY impulsive! I was on my honeymoon in Ocean City, Maryland and it was our last day so we were getting souvenirs and that's where I saw him. In this bright pink shell - which is what caught my interest right away (I found out after I bought him painted shells are a no go!). My husband thought I was NUTS but said sure! So we got him, his little carrier and went on our merry way! He rode in the car with us for 8 FREAKING HOURS to get home and he LOVED it. ( I personally thought this was weird hahaha ). During my off times, we switched out every so often for driving, I was reading EVERYTHING I could about owning and caring a hermit crab. We even bonded in the car ride home! A lot of what I've read has said that hermies are a hands off type of pet but he's special. He likes to be handled.

On the drive home he climbed onto my shoulder and sat there, watching the window for a good hour. It was awesome. And hes SO SASSY. I never knew hermit crabs could be SASSY! Heck I didn't even know they made NOISES until recently! Okay, sorry, I'm getting side tracked. I love talking about him. He's my baby.

ANYWHO.

Onto the epicness that is PPE! Here are his pics :3

This is my favorite pic <3 We're not sure if his eye is cloudy because it's an injury or what, he's had it like that since we bought him. His enclosure in that place was horrible. Think of a giant wired bird cage. No substrate. Just pebbles. I didn't see any food or water and ALL the crabs were hanging on the walls looking sad.

The pic below, is of Frick and Frack. The two babes I got in the mail as a gift from my dad. They both sadly passed but I enjoyed having them <3

Hey there Shaddeh!

Welcome to The Forum! We are very pleased to have you here, and it seems like you have such cute little guys! I am sorry to hear about your past crabs, but at least their legacy will live on with Purple People Eater! If you need any help, we would be more than happy to lend a hand and your crabbing experience!

I hope all goes well with him, and welcome once again! :D

Welcome to the HCA! I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad to hear you say that you knew they had it rough and didn't make it vs feeling horrible that you somehow did something wrong or somehow their death was your fault. Your pictures and story about your crab's personality are AMAZING! PPE sounds like a dream crab the child in all of us wish to have!

I saw my first crabs on vacation in Outer Banks and my wife saw me with that look in my eye and had to tell me in a stern voice "NO! it will die on the car ride home!" ... So closer to home when I passed an aquarium store in I went and out I came with my first crab. She went in after me and brought back out a friend for it to have. You are in the good company of what I have observed are an obsessive bunch of people who just can't stop gushing over their crabs or freaking out about conditions and behaviors we observe.

Many of us were completely and woefully ignorant and are thankful we found this place to help us get our crabitats established with good conditions

Welcome to the board. You'll probably find the cloudy eyes mean he may moult in the next couple of weeks, since its usually a tell tale sign.
