New Kid on the Block

Post by Overmountain1 » Mon Jan 27, 2020 12:18 am

Well, I stopped by my local pet store on Friday, just to kill some time, and they had all these bulbs on sale for just $1.99 each! So I promptly contacted @RiNiKy506 to see what she needed, and I even went ahead and purchased the hood I needed while I was at it! I bought 9 bulbs. Image

Well, I just HAD to check on their hermits. One of my larger hermits came from there, and she’s got a cool super dark tone to her. And then I saw this fella poking out...
Image
S/he is so unique looking- like two crabs put together kinda! She(just a stab in the dark really) has those bright bright red tips- wish I had caught the red of them all- kinda see them in the first one there- and her body and upper legs are so pale, almost like a viola coloration, and she is very unafraid and rarely pulls all the way in. We are missing the first walking leg on the right side, and I just couldn’t not bring her home! I really really hope she pulls thru. So far she has changed into a slightly lighter shell and has just been resting up and eating. So that’s great! We named her NKOTB, or New Kid for short. ImageImage I had told myself no more crabs, and my kids had told me no more too (funny) but even they fell in love and didn’t even have a negative word to say- she’s just a cool crab. Anyway, a couple more little pics of this little sweetie, tho I don’t have many bc I didn’t want to make her life any harder than it already has been! ImageImageImage

Wow, I really adore their shells! It has a nice tinge of green, and they look very curious! I'm glad that you are able to help them out, I am believing that they are grateful to have you take care of them!

Thanks everybody! New Kid seems to be adjusting and settling in ok. She’s in iso for now, I’d like to have one good molt and even the possible regen before I integrate her. She’s eating and drinking and started digging again after the first few days so that always makes me feel better too! She also swapped shells a couple times, so good crabby vibes- let’s all hope she’s gonna pull thru like a champ!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her! Image

I was just curious, did your pet shop make you pay for New Kid even though she was missing a limb? A few years back I went to PetSmart and saw a crab missing a limb. The employee told me they couldn't sell him because he was missing a limb, but I could adopt him. So I filled out the adoption paperwork and took him home for free. His name was Irwin. The poor thing only lasted less than a couple of weeks before he passed.Image I'm not sure if that is still PetSmart's policy now though.

Oh wish- no, I hadn’t heard that from them before. It could still be their policy but nobody really knows or pays attention to it? I’m not sure! My PetSmart I have brought home a few crabs from and they’ve mostly done good so far. I have lost a couple tho. Anyway, I was going to say that the local pet shop New Kid came from is just locally owned and operated I believe. They do offer a 14 day exchange/refund policy if something goes wrong. So at least they give us a little time to see if the little ones are going to make it!

I can’t get over New Kid’s stubby little eyes- so cute! I think she’s gonna grow into a sweetie with some time. Already is, but the trust isn’t there yet of course. So, even more sweet? Yeah!

I haven't bought a crabby in years so their policy might have changed since then. My Beau is almost 8 and his original buddy that passed in July was 5. They were the last guys that I bought. It would def be interesting to find out though!

I didn't notice how cute her eyes were! Look out Corn and Princess, there's a new cutie on the block!

Awww thanks y’all! Image My son was whining about missing Princess this morning.

I had thought this little one went to molt about a week but I found him sitting out this morning. Little stinker!

My E did the same thing! I think my tiniest PP may have, too, but now he's buried again. Ah, the mysterious creatures. :thanku::

Is that the famous escapee Ryder? Maybe he was planning a jail break under the sand, but at your house this time! Image

Just a quick update- I added NK to the tote with 3 of my others, they seem to be getting along quite well! Fingers crossed- how cool are those colors on NK? Image

It's amazing how much variety one species can really have. I'm half tempted to do a color experiment with my straws. I saw pictures of some on IG that are a very dark blue almost black but their joints are still red. I know diet has a lot to do with their colors. I'm wondering if I will notice a change by only feeding darker color boosting foods.

It is very plausiable. Especially if it is pigmentation linked.
