Etsy food mixes?

Post by 2headedboy » Sat Jun 12, 2021 10:21 am

Hi guys! I'm a soon-to-be crab dad, currently trying to set up my crabitat and care schedule before actually getting my crabbies (I'm going to apply for the LHCOS' adoption program).
Currently my biggest hurdle is meal planning. I've seen several Etsy shops (including some on the LHCOS' approved sellers page) advertising meals and meal kits. A few even specifically say their mixes are "complete" meals, but I am a tad wary. Are these really complete diets for hermit crabs? Would I still need to supplement with fresh foods? I'd really appreciate input from anyone who uses or has previously used these mixes.
(Also, speaking of food, does whatever fresh food I give them HAVE to be organic?)

Most of the Etsy food mixes have ingredients. You can look at what they are and see what they have and you can use other mixes of homemade food to fill in what they don’t have. Good luck!

Variety is best. A mix is nice since it offers a bunch of things at once but if you’re on a budget you can do the same thing with table scraps and miscellaneous goods from the pet store.

And no, you don’t have to feed everything organic. It’s nice to since certified organic produce have fewer pesticide residues but I offer a mixture of organic and regular based on what I feel like buying. The Environmental Working Group publishes lists of most and least contaminated produce every year: https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/full-list.php
