Molting together?!

Post by Highnmighty217 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 2:09 am

Don't think I've come across a post like this...so I have to ask....2 of my crabs are super close..like stay together 24/7 , they are both mediums, one more out goin than other then my 3rd crab is baby baby n has been down molting for a good month or more. Been wait for crabs to come up from molts as I'm gettin larger tank together. 2 mediums came up Sunday, both right on top but not visiting food/water bowls. By Tuesday no action I became concerned so I checked on them...(moved their coconut hideout) n one went right to water n visited for sometime, the other one not moving so much, so I moved him to the water n he seemed have a hard time moving much (like legs weren't strong enough n noticed one eye was cloudy, needed to molt) He got some saltwater n both back into coconut hut. Looked today n they both have buried down on top of each other. This isn't first time n I don't know what to think, if they aren't finished molting or they are just hiding out? Never heard of 2 goin down together like this....

I would leave them alone. I have a few that are buddies in my tanks. In the future, don't place them in water. Cloudy eye is a sign of molting. They might have gone down to destress and or molt. They should be fine. Try not to stress over it.

Is it a PP or an E? What do you feed them?
I looked at a few archives and saw a few people had questions of an eye or eyes being cloudy pre and post molt but they eventually cleared up. One did not. Even after a few molts. They thought it might be a lack in minerals. Maybe you could try giving more vitamins? The hermit crab patch makes a really good hermit crab supplement that you can always give in addition to food to make sure they get the nutrients they need (in addition to msw, fw, calcium, protein). I'd say perhaps try that if you can. Hopefully that helps. If not, I hope he is not blind. If it looks like it happens to the other eye too, and doesn't go away after a molt, I would be concerned. Good luck! :)

Okay, great you have the mineral supplement!
Okay, so here is the safe food list: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 25&t=92557
Here is the unsafe food list: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 25&t=92556
The hermit crabs definitely need more variety in their diet. They have a food pyramid just like we do.
Food pyramid: http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/ph ... 25&t=92554
From now on, when you make your meals, as long as it's on the safe food list, and it's organic, give it to the hermits also ;)
I personally do not do this, but some people purchase organic baby food for their hermits. You can use tiny ice cube trays to freeze portions so you get several uses out of one bottle. Hope that helps! :)

Oh I give them other things as well! I was showing you what I had from THCP! Those lists are a lifesaver, every time I wanna try something new!! I do tend to give more fruits/vegs n probably need add in more proteins, etc!

Btw, the soil supplement is worm castings. I bought a huge 20 lb bag from my local garden shop for $12! Just make sure it's organic! You can use it as potting soil. It's great stuff. Just worm poop. Crabs love poop.
