Where we discuss the behavior of our hermit crabs, as in fights, pecking orders, shell swaps, etc. Please post all naked-crab posts in the Emergency forum.

I've tried raisens, apples, different kinds of unseasoned hamburger, oats, peanuts..

The walnuts, not tried yet, don't ever seem to have access to almonds.. and grits.. uh no. all I've ever had in the house was instant, and that aint gonna do..

And weening, is never that easy.. I try.. but ya know, I want them to eat, so they dont die on me.

For the 4th time: They will not starve themselves. No matter what, if they get hungry (do they?) they will eat whatever is available to them. They're scavengers in the wild, they'll deal with it :P

leaves

You might try posting on the want-ads section of the forum and see who might trade for leaves and sticks and such.

I could, yeah.. But that require having something to trade in return. I got nothing worth trading. Not even extra shells, as I only got like 20, and most of them are for my smalls.. So, see the problem. :P

Getting them to eat is more painful then getting a full mouth root canal with no novacaine.. I've done all the tips, spritz it with salt water, mix it with stuff, leave it sitting, this and that. Nothing seems to work.. So far they've gotten.
Have you tried peanut butter or maple leaves?

hope this helps

My hermit crabs would not eat anything when i first brought them home from the pet store until i gave them cheerios(normal, not honey nut cheerios) They swelled up to the size of balloons :D

if this doesnt help, my friends crabbies also go crazy over bananas.

One thing I have noticed: Putting stinky food somewhere hard for them to get (Second level, top of a climby, etc) That seems to give them an extra reason to go for the good stuff :P

:? As long as they're just grits in the ingredients, why not?? Serve them dry, not cooked.

Course I don't think you're being pushy, and all. But, just not as simply as how ya'lls make it. My hermies to date are no where near as the same as anyone elses hermies I've ever seen or heard about.. A complete 99% difference, and so, makes it hard to do things when they don't act anyway that I think they should in accordance with what other peopels do.

commercial food may be your solution

Post by Guest » Fri Oct 20, 2006 1:54 pm

You know, all of our solutions that we're offering are good, but you may just be one of those who need to stick to commercial foods. It's not a popular decision in this community, but I can see why some would just be more confident w/ commercial food. If you go that route, try to get a high quality food and keep supplimenting w/ fresh foods on a regular basis. Carol of CrabWorks has 2 PPs that are 30 years old or more and they are fed commercial food + other goodies like oak leaves, etc, so it's not like commercial food is strictly forbidden.

Well, I haven't used commericial food in about 3 days now I think.. they did a little picking with the olives and the shredded coconut. And they've been really adtive in the water.. so not sure how thats holding out. But, I'll give them some commericial food when I change foods out again, and see if they flock to it like starving banshees or not.

city-dweller food

Post by Guest » Mon Dec 04, 2006 1:23 pm

You've got to take a look at naRnAR's new kibble. It is designed for city dwellers who have a hard time getting leaves and such that are not fertilized or sprayed w/ chemicals. It's called "Wild Autumn Harvest." It might be just what your crabs are waiting for!
