Party crab?

Post by Cydonia1 » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:00 pm

So about a month ago my biggest crab, Kermit, went down. After that everyone seemed to "slow down", not inactive but only coming out at late night, only one or 2 crabs would walk near each other at a time, they'd stay their separate ways, no activity during the day. But yesterday Kermit came back up from a molt and it's like they're, celebrating?
EVERYONE was out traveling, three in the moss pit, two on the warm side, little dude was even out and about! and even during the day they're moving around, little dude's been sitting out in the open on the log, he's usually crammed himself into one of it's crevices. They're socializing with each other, and the only thing that changed was Kermit coming up. No other difference, not even a food switch. Does it have to do with him being the biggest crab? They're actually USING the pools now instead of the tiny bowls, and He was the first one to drink out of them that i saw and now they're being copycats! :hlol: I think I have a video of my whole tat, guess starring the crabbies if you need to see it, I think Kermit was down during this. The tiny water bowls have been moved, the substrate on the back side mixed up, The foodbowl changed to a shallower, longer one and there's moss in the caddy (ableit bright green, if my mouth feels better tomorrow i'm going to try to go to this othter pet store and search)

Sooooo, why and what made Kermit the party crab? And I'll try to get picture of him, I need to for another thread on identifying what type of shell he's in because he won't use anything else but that style, and i'm awful proud of getting such a big guy through 2 molts and him living through my mistakes of the kritter keeper :3
He's my favorite, don't tell the others!

Confiming that he is the party crab, the activity level in my tat, day and night has shot up since he came back up. he also walked the entire length of the front of the tank last night and dug a neat little trench

Sounds like he's just a really social guy!

I had the same exact experience. Our largest "princess" went down for a molt for about four months. The other four crabs were hardly ever seen during this period, only coming out at night to eat and drink. During the day they were all hiding in their respective holes.

When princess emerged from her molt a couple of weeks ago it has turned into party time. Everyone is up at all hours of the day and night running about and having fun. Right now they are all up climbing on sticks and staring at us. It has been great.

I think their leader has returned and they are rejoicing. :)

Luckily because of princesses size we may not see her molt for another year or two.
