DIY chia plant garden for crabitat.

Post by Hermiearth » Sun Feb 05, 2017 7:05 pm

Hi guys, first I will start by saying that I think I got this idea off of someone on here so I don't mean to steal anyone's thunderImage

I recently ordered some chia seeds off amazon thinking I would feed them to my crabs, I accidentally ordered WAY too much so I decided I would plant a snack garden for the crabs.

The project is super easy, just get a small dish, fill it with sub (I used ee cause it was on hand), sprinkle seeds than sprinkle another thin layer of ee on top, and keep moist (sorry if that word triggers you). Also, if you have ee as sub I guess you could just plant in the tank. I kept the dish out of the tank for a few days cause I wanted a little more for them to snack on.

On the second day the seeds sprouted and they grew super quick after that! Just keep them moist. The chia garden was received well with the crabbies! I saw my little crab Carrot eating last night and this morning found some half eaten chia plants sprinkled around the dish.

Here's a pic:

That looks great! Every couple of weeks I toss some chia seeds into my tats! They will search high and low for them. Very few actually sprout!

I'll have to try planting some when everyone's down, or just growing them outside of the tat in a dish as you said then placing it in. In that method I'm assuming you could just transplant the sprouts plus what you're growing them in on the sub. In my prior attempts the seeds molded and never got to sprout.

Yeah I just put them in a dish than place it in. Maybe your seeds were too moist? That's why they molded?

I'm thinking either that or it was too humid

Can they eat chia seeds? Do they like them? I have some that I use in my morning smoothies, make chia pudding, and over night oats with. But I have never thought to feed them to my crabs. I also have quinoa but didn't know if they could eat that. And of they could, could they eat it dry or does it need to be cooked?
