Sluggish During Winter

Post by AwesomeHermit » Fri Feb 26, 2021 10:26 am

This happens every year but not this bad as it is this year. Every winter my crabs become sluggish, sometimes not moving for three days straight and it scares me. The conditions of the tank stay the same year round, so I don't know what could cause this. It could be because the tank was in the same room as the Christmas tree, but I moved the crabs in a different room, and we got rid of the tree almost two months ago. I am scared something will happen to them. I have had them for 5 years so I know a lot about them, but this really stumps me.

Goodbye my little E. See you soon.
Bye Fred. You lasted almost 4 years with me. Hope you're with my E now! See you soon Reeba as well. I can't believe I lost you only after a month.

My crabs have been quite sluggish this year too. Although the tank stays around 76-80 degrees they either don't move too much or huddle next to the heat mat. I think that because of all the winter storms it's just been really cold. Keep us updated though.

Small temperature dips and length of daylight can certainly affect them, I've noticed the same thing with mine for the past 11.5 years. In the dead of winter they pretty much just stop eating for a bit. Come spring and lengthening days they go back into full gear again. They do have seasons where they are in the Caribbean, it's a pretty decent difference in temp, so for them it might be totally normal to differ as well.

Thanks for the insight. But when I say they don’t move, like they literally sit in the same spot for 3 days in a row. It’s very worrying

^ Is that something to be concerned about?

I had 2 crabs like that for a while and it worried me, one especially. My Hermione would just sit there. I called it her “sit spot”. She was like that for a long time, but then she finally went under...and so did Flash, the other one. They’ve both come up happy and healthy since then! Hope it helps to know

Thank you. Hopefully this means they will molt soon, even though they molted less than 6 months ago.

I believe that depending on their size, they molt more than once a year...so it could be time again!
