I've been a crab owner for 6 years now... I've never seen this happen, although I find my hermies underneath the lid of their tank a lot. However, my crabs have been sharding not the rubber sealant but the hard plastic from the top of the tank trying to be escape artists. I'm curious if this has happened before to anyone else. I moved the net seen in the picture lower but they're still accessing the metal caged lid which is saran wrapped on the outside for humidity and paper weighted... I know I should get a glass lid for the three's 20 gal but my hermies and I are living the grad school $ life for now. They just always seem to enjoy climbing up top so I had left it. Is this very harmful or has anyone experienced this?

Are you sure the trim is metal and not hard plastic? Sometimes our little friends can be destructive.

I just did a google deep dive and edited my heading. The trim is hard plastic! I'm very confused at this point as to how they achieved this either way lol. They are amazing aren't they...

They can tear through metal screening given enough time and size! I've not heard of them picking at the rims but they might be bored or they might really like that corner. There will probably be evidence of plastic shavings below. I have used tanks that came this way from housing hamsters and mice, but I have to admit I'm impressed by your hermits! I wouldn't worry too much, and they won't be able to escape with a good fitting screen lid. They could easily pop up a glass lid though so probably better that you don't have one.
