Crab entertainment

Post by KDK241 » Thu Sep 01, 2016 2:17 am

Does anyone else do little things daily to entertain their crabs? I was thinking about how they don't have the same things in the same place every day in the wild and started doing small changes every night in their tank. Some days I will add a couple of shells (even ones that are too small) and before the end of the night almost every crab has checked them out. I also put at least 1 of their food dishes in a different spot every day for them to "find" or move a rock/plant/cholla wood into a different spot.

Anyone else do this or am I crazy lol?

I tried doing this an gave up after a few weeks! I guess I just ran out of ideas, but also because I couldn't really spend the - sometimes hours - rearranging/prettying up the tat.

I'm amazed at how crowded my 29 gallon has become. With the location of the two water dishes with bubblers set, there are not many options to move stuff around. I have a double tier plastic corner tray with a shell shop on the bottom and moss pit on top. The crabs mess things up enough that I'm tidying up each evening when I feed them, but not rearranging much.
Thinking of an upgrade already.

Not daily but every few weeks I'll either change out the cloth flowers, add or remove floor level items, etc. It's fun to do a major redecorate when all of the crabs are under and see their reactions when they emerge -- lots of antenna waving as they explore the new layout  .

Hello, I agree that variety is the spice of life. I like to move the water dishes and main climbing branches every week or so. The 2 PPs I have are very active and smoosh pretty much everything around so theres no use is making everything is neat. Considering how much the tides change the shoreline I think its "normal " for them to come up on a new layout. Its also when i do clean up, mold checks. I will be redoing my crabitat tonight for the purpose of adding my pet store rescue. My logic: I'm hoping the bonded pair will be so busy discovering the new layout they will be too busy to attack the new guy. Claws crossed it all goes smoothly.

Be sure to give the new guy a dunk in the tank's FW pool to get rid of any "foreign" scents before he meets the duo.

We are packing things up for the new reno being done this week, and I realized I have two grocery bags and a box full of crab accessories. Not including what's in the tank. And I've only been at crabbing for about two months....

Thanks for giving me the belly laugh! Here's a pic of the dried food area and it is missing about 10 of the containers. I've had crabs for 2.5 months. HeheheImage

Some I dried, the other is from the local health food store. It's about a 50/50 split. Hehehe
