Frustrated :(

Post by Knibitz » Fri Dec 19, 2014 5:15 pm

One of my small PPs I got from petco dropped their big leg today :(
I've seen it coming pretty much since I got him. He never really ventured around the tank, the petco I got him from had sub par conditions, the weather has been cold and I drove home with him in that cold. I didnt have enough substrate at the time so I bought more sand and reorganized the tank then introduced a new heat source because my heat was lower than acceptable.
I think in my attempts to hurry to 'save' this little guy and get conditions perfect was just too many changes in too short of time :(
Ever since I put him in the tank hes never been active. He just finds a corner and wedges himself in it. I wouldnt have noticed he lost a leg if he didnt suck into his shell when I walked up and the leg didnt get sucked in too.
Ugh this is so frustrating my tank is more perfect than ever but in my race to perfectionism I think I went too quick ;-----;

Hes still alive. Just huddled in his shell and hiding. I put honey, blood worms, and calcium powder in an egg shell near him to maybe chear him up and give him a tempting energy snack when he's stressing, but I feel like crap and my spirits are low :(

Sorry to hear your little guy is ailing. These buggers are so tough in some ways and so unbelievably delicate in others. True, hermits don't adjust well to a quick succession of changes and winter temps are a factor, too, but you've given him a chance to live just by getting him away from Petco (the one by me has abysmal conditions for their crabs :x ). I'm assuming the other crab you got at the same time is doing OK so this little crab is proving less resilient. You're a caring and skilled crabber so don't give up hope that he'll pull through and don't second-guess yourself as it's the fastest way to go crazy. As the saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20. We're all pulling for your little guy so keep us posted.

Thanks for encouragement crabinski. The other crab I got with him has been down and up since I got them. He was up a few days ago but down again that same night.

Unfortunately this guy didnt make it :( I checked him just now and when I moved the plant he was under, he was hanging out of his shell. Sniff test proved death :( poor thing...

Its ok Knibitz. PPS happens. Get a new crab per Petco's policy and be better prepared. You can do it!

I'm really sorry :( My 3rd crab, Igor, dropped all but one of his legs to PPS and ultimately didn't make it. I was devastated. The important thing is you've learned and you're much better prepared. Like Crabinski said, hindsight is 20/20. I'll keep my fingers crossed that nothing like this happens again to you :)
Crabbing since July 2014! 75 gallon with 12 Purple Pinchers.

Poor little guy. I have lost several to PPS. It happens and it sucks. I'm sorry you are having to go through this.
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.
#2 rule of crabbing - see above

Thanks guys. *hugs* the rest of of the colony is doing great. My order from Naples came in a few days ago and its been nonstop shell shopping from several of my crabs since then.
One of them decided on the gorgeous polished tapestry turbo - super excited about that. Now he just needs to keep it clean and shiny like thats gunna happen lol
And someone went up or down sometime today and made a massive mess at the back of the tank - bah!

Hate when this happens and I'm sure we have all had it happen one time or another, but one thing that helps me is knowing that when he did go he went comfortable instead of in the pet store. Hate it for your loss, but even if you gave him a few hours or few days of comfort it was still worth it. Pray the others molt well for you.
Happy owner of 10 pp's, 7 E's, 2 straws, 1 ruggie, 2 viola's, 2 dogs, to many kids to count and one awesome hubby

Thanks. I just left for the holidays and have a pet sitter checking my cats and crabs.
Theyre just refilling food/water, so I dont expect them to be able to tell me anything. Hopefully the quiet over the holidays will do the crabs some good.

Sorry for your loss, I've lost some crabbies to PPS. Squirt lost all his limbs, Willow Rosenburg just passed away recently from postponed PPS because I never got her isolated to molt just found her one day huddled up and limbs scattered. She died a few days later. My regards.
