Are sprouts bad?

Post by ErikRasmussen » Fri Mar 06, 2015 2:18 pm

Whenever I fluff up the substrate every now and again i occasionally find little rootlet sprout things which i assume happens from left over food. I just redid my tank a week or so ago and i just noticed these among the fake plants. I took out the fake plants they were growing in to get a better picture...

Does anyone know what they are? Are they bad for the crabs or are they good or do they just not matter?

If you've had any little berries or chia seeds or any mixes with tiny seeds they can sprout in the tank, as far as I know they are harmless and the crabs like to pick at them and eat them. Lots of people plant chia seeds in their tats so they'll have little sprout gardens.

Yep, I occasionally get little sprouts that pop up from them dragging food around and burying it. They don't hang around long before the crabs shred 'em. I think sometimes seeds and things can come along with moss or cocofiber too. If you're concerned you can just pluck them out but I think for the most part it's not anything to worry about.

Sprouts can be a very nutritious food source! I am thinking they will relish them so don't get too attached to how they look
