HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hello,

I'll be gone for a little less then a week for Thanksgiving. I couldn't find anyone to take care of them, so I'm going to take them with me. We live in Florida so it isn't cold, and I was gonna bring my spare UTH in a 8 gallon tote. I have two crabs. It would be set up just like there normal crabitat. :3

My only problem is last week one went down for a molt. He's pretty small so he should be up, but what if he's not? Should I pick up the tank and take the whole thing with me? :/

He buried only a few days after I got him so I couldn't get him in the ISO tank. I'm not sure where he is so I can't scoop him up.

Any other advice for traveling? We will be in a 32 foot trailer with air conditioning, heating, and all that. (That's my definition of camping, LOL!) The car ride is about 3 hours so they'll be in a large critter keeper with siren wrap over it to keep the humidity in, then once we arrive they'll go into the tote.

For less than a week you do not need to take them. As long as your conditions are stable, leave them quite a bit of dried food and full dishes of water and they should be fine for a few days. It is also less stressful for them, as that quick of vacation would stress them out.

My only problem with that is my tank isn't the best at keeping humidity. I spray it about twice a day, and if I don't it gets in the 60s. Is there a way to increase that? Moss really isn't working for me. :/ I have a glass hood so none should be getting out.

Hmm that seems weird.. Are you sure that you hygrometer is calibrated correctly? Sounds like it may be off if you ask me

Like purpleperson-I have gone on shorter trips and left them, but yeah, my humidity was sustained on it's own. It takes some messing around with different things to get your particular tank stable. What kind of top do you have? Have you thought about a bubbler or a humidifier? Those items always have worked for me to get my humidity stable.

Landlubber - they said that they have a glass top, so the humidity should be holding quite well.

What about the bubble or humidifier though? That always did the trick for me.

I'll look into a humidifier, but one of my neighbors has volunteered to come in and check on them every day. Should be good.

I travel overseas frequently and leave my crabs with dried foods and a reptile instant waterer.As long as you have an established tank and good conditions and are healthy,the crabs will be fine.They actually do better when left alone.I leave plenty of leaves and bark and cuttlebone.A few days will be ok.
