Strange Death

Post by soilentgringa » Mon Aug 08, 2016 6:13 pm

Well...discovered a dead crab with dropped limbs under a plant while doing weekly tank maintenance. Abdomen was being eaten by small white worms. They appeared to be some sort of maggot.

No evidence of attack. All limbs were right next to the crab and the crab itself was very stiff.

Strange.

So sorry, i hate the fact that we don't always know what causes sudden death in these crabs.

Any ID of the said worms? Maybe if we could find the species (or at least, genus) of the worms we could work backwards from there? Hows the tank conditions going? And (roughly) how long have you had the said crab?

(even though it may be trivial, fill out the emergency help template?)

I'll post a pic later.

My tanks have been stable for a long time, everything is on point, nothing new added, nothing different as far as food, etc.

That's really weird.. I had tiny white worms once crawling on the walls around my sw dish.

These are short and fat like rice grains. The long skinny ones are nematodes. I keep meaning to take a pic but have been crazy busy.

Fly larvae? Not the cause of death, just a clean up crew. Sorry for your loss.

Not to be weird... You all know waaay more about hermies than me. I'm just throwing this out there. Did the hermies have any poo to eat? Maybe fleas got in the tank somehow & the little guy ate the larve or something? I believe I remember you said you have other animals, even though you don't need them for even 1 flea obviously.

The description just reminded me of when I rescued my poor kitty. She had white rice like worms near her rear and she had no fur on her tummy, bum & half her tail (we called her Princess Bald Butt). Come to find out, she was extremely allergic to fleas & the worms were from the fleas. She's all good now! Almost 10 years old... Furry... Fat... And happy!

Anywho, I'm really sorry for your loss. That is a very odd thing. Hope everyone else is OK. I'm curious to hear if you guys figure out what the heck happened & what the worms are.

You are describing tape worm segments.
