HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Should I just stick with plastic aquarium stuff or are there some live plants that would be safe? I don't want to introduce any bugs or mites in the tank, but I thought some actual tropical plants would be nice. Has anyone used air plants with any success?

Air plants work great however the crabs WILL destroy any live plant you put in. Be careful, as crabbers have ended up spending hundreds of dollars on live plants when the crabs end up destroying them. Make sure any plants you put in are free of pesticides or fertilizers though!

I have put a few plants in my crabitat, but they always get destroyed. Spider plants, aloe plants, bamboo (not lucky).

All plants need to be organic - free of pesticides and fertilizers for at least 3 months to be completely safe in my opinion.

Unless you are putting them in for the purpose of being mauled and eaten, don't put in live plants. A very large and robust plant might stand a chance with tiny crabs, but they will still do damage.

I used to sprout grasses in a container by my window and then put it into the tank when it was a few inches high. The crabs loved that.
