The General Rules Of Crabbing

Post by crabby33 » Tue Jul 10, 2018 1:13 pm

These are the general rules of crabbing:

Don’t trust pet store food
Don’t trust pet store employees
Don’t trust anything marketed towards hermit crabs
Adopt, don’t shop (A lot of crabbers don’t recommend buying from pet stores or ordering crabs online)
Limit handling to reduce stress or hands off period
Treat hermit crabs like wild animals
Do not dig for or disturb molters
Follow the food pyramid
Be careful where you put the UTHs, consider that hermit crabs are obligate burrowers when it’s time to molt or they dig because they like it or want to. UTHs may be called Under Tank Heaters but placing it on the back is believed to be safer. Crabbers prefer to ignore where UTHs are really intended to go.

ImageImage if this isn't the truest thing I've ever read on this forum.

I have a little 20 gal, and when I bought my 55 I thought "oh my gosh I'll never fill this huge tank!" And now that I'm actually placing things in and adding stuff I'm thinking "umm, I need more room... "
My boyfriend wouldn't even awknoledge that statement. ImageImageImage

I mentioned a crab room to my husband. He didn't acknowledge that either.

Speaking of your incredible crab room!!!! We've been in our rent house about 6 months. The spare room has a bunch of empty boxes and clothes we never wear. "Our" agenda this week is to clear it all out and set up a desk in there. MY agenda is to make it a crab/fish room..... ImageImage

Ohh. One part can be for a desk - with a convenient placed nano aquarium - and the rest can be decked out of tanks. Tell him its all about compromise, and a happy wife equates to a happy life... (play all the cards you can!)

What I was saying is that most crabbers don’t trust pet store food or pet store employees to know how to care for crabs so making their own food or adopting crabs is preferred because shipping crabs is a very controversial subject. And a lot of items marketed towards hermit crabs are believed to be dangerous. A hands off approach is recommended because handling is believed to be dangerous to the crabs’ health. Crabs were taken from the wild to end up in our tanks, so therefore they should be treated like wild animals.

Yes. That's all very true. Sorry this got a bit off topic.

Like, I have a crab in pre-molt right now so I’m staying hands off with that crab to reduce stress other than to check the cork log where he’s hiding and continue to feed and water them like normal. When I first got the set up, there was the tank, shells, and pellets. But once I started researching and found out that pellets shouldn’t be given to them, I threw away those pellets and have stuck with buying healthy food from online stores like the Healthy Hermit ever since. I have since found that my crabs love scrambled eggs. I even made some this morning with extra virgin olive oil. Bell peppers are also a hit because they will drag it off the food dish.

We just found a mom and pop pet store about an hour from us while we were picking up our adoptions. He was in HEAVEN! there were two rooms of aquariums. At this rate I doubt it will take much persuasion anymore ImageImage

Can vouch for it working. Still responsible for cleaning rest of said house, tho. :/
