Post by Guest » Fri Nov 10, 2006 10:01 pm

Man.. talk about busy... ANYWAYS!

My crabs are all doing well and Im about to catch up on how everyones are doing. Im starting a new crab-blog because the old one is deleting older posts! not kewl! I was using it as my journal of goings ons, but havnt been.

Im going to start a hard copy also now though, and keep it updated with pictures and descriptions so i can learn more from the little guys.

Does anyone else crab journal? i know there are a few blogs around :)

We keep a Word journal of our own (not published) that tracks when and where we purchased and when any of our crabs change shells. We will also track molts and deaths and anything else of interest.

Perhaps if it becomes interesting enough, we will publish it somewhere, but for now it is just for our own amusement.

i keep a notebook split into three sections: buying them/molting activity/deaths, shell sizes they are all currently in, and extra shells i have available also marking the opening shape (helps to see which sizes i need to buy).

so it's really just for my own use but its totally helpful keeping track of how long someone has been down, type/ size a particular hermie likes, and what i need to buy.

I keep several kinds of journals too.

Each crab gets their own file with size since last molt, purchase dates, molts and the dates, a recent pic, and some description of defining characteristics to help tell them apart from each other, and also their personalities.

My second journal is a list of my crabs and which tank they're in, and it will say something like, haven't seen Rowan in four days, or, this crab acting sluggish and pre-molt, you get the drift. Any crab that I haven't seen within 5 days time gets flagged by the font being turned blue from black so I can see at a glance how many crabs are down.

Then of course I have my photos, which is a way of journaling also. I have a fav folder that all pics go in, and my screen saver points to it and does a slide show, then they all have individual folders also with their pics in them.

So now you all know, I'm more nuts than you all thought, hun?

I keep one chart with the names, species, specific characteristics, date bought, date died, date buried molt 1, date surfaced molt 1, molt 1 duration, molt 1 success, and then all that for molt 2, molt 3 etc.

the I keep another chart which every type of food that i ever feed them, and how many times they've been fed that food each month (so i don't repeat foods) and whether i have that food in stock right now.

then i keep another chart with what i feed each day.

I forgot one other journal, which is what crabs, sizes and species are in which tank. It helps when it's time to pick shell for the different tats.

I've had 2 deaths (probably from molting difficulties and stuff :'( ) and 2 lost Es that aren't back yet o.O since the summer. I also have this crab that escapes the tank every day and gets found by me. Today she went into where I keep the shells that aren't boiled and changed O.O. I got a lid today to keep her from escaping. I also had a straw death due to PPS maybe a month or two ago.

I got 3 new Es for my birthday, and just got the last one they had today. I'm up to 19 crabs! :D

very good! Im glad there are others out there journaling. My journal isnt ever as detailed/organized as most of yours, i usually just do daily observations of my crabs.

i was doing very well, went my first year with no deaths, then this last summer we had no air conditioning, and I lost about 4, i also lost 4 from PPS. :(

I'm gonna start journaling. After losing track of Jeremy periodically and not being able to recall for how long, etc. etc., it seems like the smart thing to do. I'm about to make a significant shell purchase and I've been measuring everybody and current shell sizes on a piece of lose leaf which I know is gonna get lost if I don't tranfer the info soon. Journaling, just seems smart.

Wow.... I do an online blog and I've wanted to keep a crabbie journal at home... but I have a problem. I'm such a perfectionist that once I get something on there messed up or run out of room I'd prolly get mad at it. HAHAHA I'm such a dork.

There... how's that for just being odd. sigh
