flying with crabs

Post by Rocky » Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:24 am

hey guys, in a couple weeks i get to make a trip to vancouver for the weeked (i rarely leave the island!) this is a great oppurtunity to check out all the pet stores for supplies.. but i know im bringing my KK just in case someone really needs a home  (or i find some teeny Es) would crabbies be ok to fly? its only a couple hours i think, so its shorter then when they get shipped to canada/america, i just dont want to stress them out if the elevation or something bugs them  thanks for your help

Call the airline you're flying on and make sure you can bring them on as carry-on. Get someone at that office to fax or mail you a signed letter from a supervisor saying that you are allowed to bring then as carry-on and make sure you have that letter on you at all times at the airport.

I've read too many stories of people getting to the gate only to have to throw their turtles/hermit crabs in the trash because they aren't allowed on board or because the employees are dumb and won't double-check the regulations. I don't know how much better the Canadian airlines are, though I have a feeling they rock compared the US. :) Still, better to be prepared!

And yes, as long as they are in the cabin with you the crabs will be safe. As checked luggage.... there's always the risk of them freezing on the tarmac or not being pressurized correctly in the hold.

Canada may be more relaxed, but I know in Australia, if you're flying domestic your pets go into baggage, ( the only exception is service dogs.) and even then, it's only from certain airports. If you're flying international, all pets have to go freight.

But I do know some airlines have heated areas for animals.
