After work this morning I got to looking at my tank, the bottom sand looked WAY darker than the rest....I got a sinking feeling, grabbed a chopstick and did the test along the glass, sure enough a few inches from the bottom collapsed as soon as I pulled the stick out. This is the first time I had to dig up the entire tank. Bacteria bloom, an inch of standing water, whole 9 yards. Luckily, for one we have a shop vac. Two, I have an amazing fiance who came to my rescue and helped be my muscles. He is THE best. 2 were under, digging just for "fun" and I carefully excavated them holding my breath the whole time praying they were okay, both were responsive and not the pink molty color, so they got isoed until I got everything out back together, they were both active and angry, so both got a dip and went in with the rest. I literally was just thinking that I was coming up on a year and that a deep clean would be in order....well now it's done. The thing is, i haven't misted the tank daily, or even weekly for a long time now, so it makes me wonder how long it's gone on... I suppose there's another lesson of why deep sub is important guys, because obviously no crabs chose to molt down there or they would have drowned. I have a lot of crab goodies on the way like ispoods and tank decorations, so I'm trying to stay positive that it was all worth it...but my house smells like old eggs and feet right now. Just so thankful everybody is alive and well, and glad I followed my gut, because the upper levels were becoming very saturated as well. So uh. Don't spray your tank every day...don't be like Rachel, cuz sludgy sand is gross, and is apparently harder to notice than one might think. :/

Do you have bubblers? My bubblers cause a lot of moisture in the sand, but it evens out because of the airflow in the tank.

I do, but my dishes were above ground level with ramps. I honestly contribute this to spraying so much when I thought I was having humidity issues several months back. I sprayed twice a day, sometimes more before I realized that it could cause oversaturation. Its been looking darker there for a long time, but I always just chalked it up to just sand being mixed unevenly with cocofiber. It was just today I noticed how dark it really was (a bacteria bloom I realized after digging.) I'm just glad it happened now rather than when I first started... I still felt helpless and scared, but I at least knew how to go about handling the problem...so thank you again HCA!! So thankful my babies are all safe, I was so freaked I was gonna lose one...
