Also, is there a way to calibrate your thermometer as well? Or is that just a mystery?
I have both analog right now, and am going to be upgrading to digital as soon as my mom will let me get hold of my credit card.

Yes, you can do the salt test with any hydrometer but some cannot be adjusted so you would have to remember the difference.
Say it is 5 points off. So you have to automatically add 5 points every time you read it.
