You mentioned an aquarium hood with lights in the post you linked would that be for heat ? another thing I'm curious about is how do you know how hot your hot side is ? Should i put a gauge close to by not next to the heater i would really liked to know the actual temp that side of my tank gets with my ultra therm.

It's called a reptile hood, they can take heat because they are made of metal, and typically hold your incandescent bulbs. From just my looking around, they seen harder to find for larger aquariums. Most of them are made to hold 2 or more bulbs, and some even have spots for fluorescent lights too.
As far as knowing how hot things are, I would say that you could either get two separate gauges to put in both places, but I guess that would only work with analog.
