Proper 10 gallon tank hood?

Post by crabnewb » Fri Jan 30, 2015 8:59 pm

I'm trying to prepare a setup, i'd like have something almost identical to this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=2386 but I cannot find a glass hood that will accommodate the lighting and heat lamps. Also, what type of bulb goes in to the light strip? Is it just a full spectrum bulb? I also read that recommended wattage's are 15, is that for the full spectrum as well as the ceramic heater? Sorry for the questionnaire but I have no experience in any of this.

Edit: after a little bit of reading around I'd think i'd like to try and go light and heat lampless. Would a proper ultratherm be able to keep a 10 gallon at 80 degrees? Also, would I be able to run tubing for a bubbler if I'm able to find a glass lid? Perhaps a custom cut of plexiglass would be preferred.

I have a hinged glass lid on my 29g. The lid has a semi-rigid trimmable plastic strip at the back, specifically to allow cutouts for tubing. On my tank, I cut out a small rectangle in each corner to allow air circulation without sacrificing humidity. I also have an 18" aquarium strip light with a tropical reptile fluorescent bulb (5.0, I believe) atop the rear glass panel and keep the light on a timer.

If you're thinking of a hinged glass lid, check out the offerings on the Dr F&S website (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/fish-supp ... /3730/3731) but, in order to get the correct fit, you'll need to know the brand of tank you have, i.e., Aqueon, Tetra/Marineland, etc. My 29g is from Petco and is therefore a Tetra so the Marineland brand lid is the one I purchased.

Re the right size Ultratherm: the rule of thumb is to get the largest one that will fit on the back of the tank and reach from the top of the substrate to the top of the tank. I could have gotten the 11x30 for the 29g but, as I wanted to create a cooler area at one end of the tank, I opted for the 11x23 instead. That size keeps the "warm" part of the tank at 84-85 and the "cooler" part of the tank at 75-79.

Hope this helps :) .

I was thinking of going plexiglass for its versatility. i like how i can drill for only what i need. Also, the title may be null and void because i think i may of decided to go 20 gallons. Also, those lights that you have sound like just lights, not heat. Am i correct? Is the mat your only heat source, and would i be able to use it as my own only heat source as well? I would prefer not to use light unless there are substantial benefits to doing so

For heat the most popular option seems to be an ULTRATHERM UTH. We recommend the largest that will fit on the back of your tank above the substrate or no more than 1" below the sub line.

I did run across this for a screen cover http://www.hermitcrabpatch.com/Acrylic- ... /ct150.htm would this do a better job than a plain old piece of plexiglass sitting on the top? Im really just interested in maintaining as much humidity as I can.
