UTH
Why do people stick the UTH on the side, my dad is getting mad at me for telling him everyone says to put it on the side. His argument is I have a 50°F room (I'm trying to be cautious about the crabitat heat), and heat rises.

Re: UTH
The reason the UTH is usually attached to the side is that if it were on the bottom it wouldn't be able to penetrate through the substrate (if your sub is proper depth) You may want to look into insulating it so that it heats the tank more efficiently

Re: UTH
You can use Styrofoam, and or cardboard with sheets of aluminum foil. When I insulate I jam pieces of aluminum foil in the cracks between foam to keep heat from escaping.

^This worked really well for me. You can tape on the heat mat then tape everything else on

Re: UTH
Remember that not all brands you can safely insulate. If you have a zoo-med brand, you can't. But I know that the ultratherms (and maybe the flukers?) can be safely.

Re: UTH
Is there a way to hide the ugly mess the insulation makes?

Re: UTH
Most of the time the insulation is on the back where you can't see it.
If it bothers you, place some aquarium background along the side(s) that you want to cover up. Would work great and look great too.

I covered the sides with black duck tape.
