Sad conditions of so many crabs

Post by Candie » Tue Mar 15, 2016 8:06 pm

Ok so I'm shopping online (some website like ebay) looking for a cheap upgrade tank and people are selling those round wire cages and hamster cages as hermit crab cages. People are commenting on how many crabs they can put in there and if they could get it at a cheaper price, some people said 4 crabs can fit on something smaller than a 5 gallon tank. It makes me so mad to see this and people commenting on buying it and crabs, so I simply put a comment under a few saying how these are not sutible and that hermits need at the smallest a 10 gallon tank, humidity, 2 kinds of water and at the least 6 inches of Substrate. I was hoping to discourage people into getting them and prevent some crabs from being tortured. I said it in the most appropriate way and wasn't rude at all. My comment on one was deleted and I was blocked from commenting, someone told me to stop being rude and to go walk the beach and stores to tell people. This just makes me so mad and as much as I love my crabs I wish stores would stop selling them or at least tell people what they require. I know a small amount of people know how to take care of them and I'm overjoyed with the amount of people on this site who know but the amount who don't is way greater. I wanted to share this just to show how much this angers me and when I tried to help all I got was negatively

This was the incredibly small cage that the owner was selling when I was blocked

Please comment you opinions on this cage, I can't be the only one who couldn't resist nicely telling them this is by far the worst thing you could put a hermit in

Please note that this cage is the size of a food container, it's so sad and I know I should have ignored it

Yuck, it's hard to see this stuff. I keep fish, and i see the same thing with them, uninformed keepers who don't care enough to learn. Unfortunately some people don't want to listen or accept advice. We bought a crab at petsmart recently, and the employee helping us asked me a few questions about my setup first, he seemed so relieved, he said it was nice to sell them to people who know what they're doing. And it's not difficult...the info is out there and so easy to get! but too many people can't be bothered. I really struggle with this, too many people keep small pets like this as a novelty or a disposable pet. I think because fish/crabs are so different from us in how they breathe, eat etc it's harder for people to understand them and recognize their discomfort or suffering, and easier to ignore it or not to notice. A dog or a cat in pain is easier for us to recognize because as mammals we can empathize with them. I hate when people treat small pets as less important than our cats and dogs. We owe all our pets the best possible care! ESPECIALLY pets like this, they're not even technically domesticated, they didn't ask to be caught and kept in captivity!

:x :x :x

....sorry. Vented real quick. Ha ha ha.

I bought two of my crabs from my local petsmart, too, and was both happy and relieved that the two girls that helped me knew a great deal about proper crab care. I still made some suggestions but they knew a lot that went beyond the typical "basic care sheet." I was curious about whether that came from personal experience or if petsmart actually provided proper training.
With just a little creativity and resourcefulness, one can create a proper crabitat for pretty cheap, even if they only buy the essentials first and fancy upgrades in bits and pieces. It's hard to resist telling the people who sell those Inhumane wire cages where they can shove those cages.
My happy little crab family:
Zip (July 2015)
Peanut and Shelly (August 2015)
(Sweet) Pea and Sandy (March 2016)

Not only hermit crab does this happen to, but also other animals. Like hamsters are sold cages at PetSmart that are one foot by one foot. This is TINY because hamsters are supposed to get cages that are at least 360 square inches. There are also products sold like cotton, which might not seem harmful, but what do you think happens when an animal eats cotton? There is also a "treat" sold to guinea pigs and the first ingredient is sugar. There are also many other harmful products.

It`s just too sad.
