Tricks of getting rid of gnats?

Post by Ryry » Tue Dec 09, 2014 1:29 pm

Just wondering if any one has any good tips? I've been avoiding any fresh food and fruit lately but I don't want to continue that for much longer. My crabs love fresh fruit so I feel bad! I've been changing my water as often as I can to make sure they arnt making any more gnats in the tank. I'm thinking the next clean I do of the tank I'll scrape off a little of the sub and wash down all their stuff in there.

I'm just hoping some one has a better quicker method!! I appreciate any help!

Maybe try something like this? Don't put it in the tank, obviously, but maybe on your lid? I haven't dealt with gnats, but I have a feeling they're similar to fruit flies and are SUCH a pain to get rid of. I'm battling fruit flies right now and my normal tricks aren't working. I don't think they'll hurt the crabs, but I hate seeing them in the tank. Keep on top of cleaning out bits of food that are dragged from the dish. Mine like to carry them off and hide them in random places, so I really have to go searching. It's a disgusting treasure hunt! Haha.

Mix equal parts water and apple cider vinegar with a drop or two of dishsoap and put little bowls of it all around the area where the tank is. (It's not safe for the crabs to touch, but if you can use something they can't get into like a pop bottle you can put it inside the tank as well.) Should clear the problem up with a couple of days, though you may need to repeat as the bowls fill with dead flies and new flies hatch out in the tank. If the vinegar itself isn't working, add a little bit of fruit juice or honey to sweeten it. This works for me every time. :)

I use this in the top-most corner out of reach of curious crabs. It's been working absolutely amazing!

That will probably be easier for my to use- I have blankets everywhere around my tank and a cup of liquid is asking for trouble...

I use this hanging from the ceiling above the tank. Tacky but works like a charm. Image
