My experience with a flooded tank(1.5 inches)

Post by Crabbzymagnus » Mon Jan 26, 2015 5:52 am

Hello Everyone!I just wanted to share about my experience with a flooded tank!It was 2 months ago when i flooded it,i was refilling their water bowl with a full 1 litre bottle n i dropped it,The whole bottle was empty once i took it out,The water was almost 2 inches high,So my crabs had to endure living in a flooded environment for almost 2 weeks!(School was tough)before i changed everything,But before that i made a rock wall,so both my ruggies would just sit there....
Here are some of the pictures i took:

Floods are not fun at all! But your sub really needs to be deeper. If it had been at the recommended 6", they would have been able to carry on as usual, until you were able to change it. But at least you gave them something to stand on.

Also, a false bottom helps tremendously for this exact situation.

It looks great but you still need to invest in a bit more sand. 6 inches is the minimum. Without it the more likely another crab will stumble across a molter and the consequences are cannibalistic behavior. Let's see that sub up to depth! ;) flooding is never fun. I lost 2 crabs in my first flood. They are awful.
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

I would buy more sand if the sand in my country wasn't so expensive,my country does import playsand at all and collecting the sand from the beach is considered "stealing"So i had no choice but to buy the sand at the pet store($30) for 1 bag,i bought 2 bags(not calci sand, normal sand),cost me an arm and a leg!And i couldn't find EE in any of the pet stores!Sorry about 2 of ur crabs.

Sand is not too expensive in Singapore. Really depends on the brand you get and where you get from. What is the weight of the 30 bucks bag?

Oh good! Maybe you can help Crabbzymagnus with where to find affordable substrate. :) You can find that thread here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=102798.

Maybe its always worth a shot. Just dont buy anything with calcium in it. Pure silica sand is good, as i understand.

I think i may just bring a giant bucket to the beach n scoop some sand really quickly n then run back to the car.

Go "Far East flora" at queensway.
It's called lawn sand and cost about 4 bucks per pack (5 kg?)
Wash it 3 times in water before use.
Drain off as much water as you can. Then mix with marine salt and its ready to use!
I add 30% fine coral sand to this, which you can get from the fish shops.
My crabs love this.
