If it came from a store it'll be grapewood, which is safe.
If you collected it yourself it's going to be hard to say for sure. Stick it in water overnight and if it smells astringent or if crumbles the next day it should be a softwood like pine or fir, which is up in the air when it comes to use on hermits. Anything else should be safe, but pinpointing the exact species may not be possible unless it gives off a distinctive smell. (Oak smells like oak, walnut smells like walnut, etc.)
If it were me, I'd use it after giving it a good boil, but I'm a bit bold when it comes to offering things to my hermits. Other keepers are much more conservative.
