Need someone to identify this piece of wood. Please help

I need help identifying what species of wood it is, as I need to find out if its safe for hermit crabs

It's a weathered knot, which is going to make it harder to ID. Where did it come from? Is the inside of the knot really really dark?

If it came from a store it'll be grapewood, which is safe.

If you collected it yourself it's going to be hard to say for sure. Stick it in water overnight and if it smells astringent or if crumbles the next day it should be a softwood like pine or fir, which is up in the air when it comes to use on hermits. Anything else should be safe, but pinpointing the exact species may not be possible unless it gives off a distinctive smell. (Oak smells like oak, walnut smells like walnut, etc.)

If it were me, I'd use it after giving it a good boil, but I'm a bit bold when it comes to offering things to my hermits. Other keepers are much more conservative.

I got it from the previous owner when I purchased a used tank off of him, this wood was a decorative piece for his pet which I assume is a lizard of some sort.

It's most likely grape wood. I'd soak it overnight in salt water before adding it to the tat.

Personally, It looks like grapewood/vine root. It should be safe to offer to the crabs.
