Post by pearl29mi » Mon Dec 28, 2015 11:28 am

I am going to upgrade to a 40 gallon and I was wondering what size ultratherm I need and where do I get it at?

Going for an Ultratherm is a smart move: they are very sturdy, can be easily attached/removed/repositioned and can be insulated, too.

There are three types of 40g tanks, the most common being the 40g Breeder which is 36" long-18" wide-16" high; 40 Highs are 36x13x20 and 40 Longs are 48x13x16. Assuming a 40 Breeder with a minimum of 6" of substrate (more likely 8-10"), you'll want an Ultratherm that covers the back of the tank without dipping too far below the substrate. The two options would be 6"x35" or 11"x35" -- the latter would work if you were planning on only the minimum 6" substrate depth so the 6"x35" is your best bet. Ultratherms are available solely online and the best prices/best shipping fee is ReptileBasics.com. The pad you want is $23.99 and shipping is still, I believe, a flat $6 so the total cost would be $30. While it may seem pricey, a ZooMed ReptiTherm UTH is only 8"x18" and can cost as much as $50!

This link will get you right to the Ultratherm page on their website: http://www.reptilebasics.com/ultratherm-heat-pads.
