HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Last night I set two bricks of ecoeaeth brand cocofiber to soak, and this morning, while adding another brick I found four or five pieces of plastic shreds. I don't know if it would cause any harm to the crabs or not, I do know that plastic still deteriorates, just a lot more slowly than more biodegradable type things (paper, food stuff, etc) this happened once before when I upgraded to the 29L, id only found one, but it was still there. It is easy to correct, just dig through the dirt and pay attention, but still an aggravation. Just thought you guys would like this precaution ^^

Good reminder. I've found lots of bits of plastic and other debris in my cocofiber over the years.

Yep. Last year we had people on the iguana forum who found shards of glass or bits of metal.

I sent an email to their website, is this all brands or just eco earth? I'd hate to go sitting for plastic and cut myself

It might be because they are collecting the coconut fiber outdoors or something, other stuff is bound to get mixed in :/

pshaw. Cocofiber isn't 'gathered"; trees are chopped down and processed in a factory.

This is a sign of sloppy procedures.

I thought the cocofiber was coconuts chopped up, not trees. The reptile bark is the trees.

Either way Nate, YOU ARE RIGHT!!! very sloppy procedures!!

Yeah, I thought the fiber were coconut skins ground down, pressed into bricks, and dehydrated? I didn't know it was the trees? Unless they're culling trees for coconuts. That doesn't make sense to me, bit then again, people usually dony make sense.

yeah thats what i thought, but i had a picture in my head of guys going around collecting coconuts ripping off the husk, and then moving on to the next coconut lol.

Does anyone know if the coir dyes the sand? My soil/sand is darker today than it was two days ago

I've noticed with mine when it's dry it looks light brown and when it's wet it looks almost black. What color does yours look like?

Right now it stands at a mocha color, where as when I mixed in the sand it was like an iced coffee from mcdonalds... (sorry guys. I don't know the technical names of colors xD ill use mccafe as a color scheme lol)

I'm not an expert on this. Have you checked the moisture levels? Is it sand castle consistency? I wouldn't think they put dye in the sand. What brand did you buy? Do you still have the bag to read the ingredients?
