Adding UTH with molters?

Post by Hollym2247 » Sat Oct 01, 2016 2:27 pm

All 4 are down molting, as far as I know. Unfortunately, I saw two of them while cleaning dishes, and know where at least one of the other two are. I believe 3 to be down on the cool end. Normally, my tank runs about 77-78 on the warm side and 73-75 on the cool side. But, it's getting colder here, so the warm side has dropped to 74-76. I have a larger UTH, but is it safe to add when they're molting? Probably more safe than letting it get too cold?

My crabs are pretty big. First went down at the beginning of August, 4th about a week ago, so it's reasonable that they may not come up for months yet. It will be 66 in the house by then, and below freezing outside.

What would you do?

I think it should be fine to add it to the back of the tank above the substrate line as long as you don't move the tank you really can't remove the tank with molters as it could collapse their molt caves but if you can get to the back with out having to move it it should be fine

Adding a uth won't hurt molters.

Are you supposed to have a warm and cool aide? I have two UTH on the back one os larger and would pit put more heat. The other is a mini UTH. My crabitat stayed at 80.

Some choose to, as it is likely in the wild they would have some flux in temp, others choose to keep temps cometely stable. Honestly as long as the specs are within the safe range, I don't think it makes a huge difference.

I would definitely recommend an Ultratherm UTH from reptile basics or the bean farm. You can only purchase Ultratherm heaters online but it is so very worth it! Price wise compared to the zoomed, it's about the same depending on what size but the wattage is higher so it puts out more heat, making it more cost effective. They can also be safely insulated either with aluminum foil and cardboard you might already have laying around, or Reflextix which seems quite recommended as well.

I recommend Ultratherm, while they are pricier, and only online, they seem to be reviewed as the "best," as they produce a lot of heat very well and can be insulated to add a boost. I love mine and would never go back to any other brand or type of heater. They can be purchased from reptilebasics (cheaper) or the beanfarm (more sizes.)

from as much as I have heard (but I am not an expert) they are not going to hurt molters.

Thank you everyone! I am going to purchase the Ultratherm! What size would you recommend for a 29 gallon?

I ordered the 23x11 one for mine. Of course its not here yet so I can't vouch for its effectiveness.

Measure the back of your tank and use one that will cover the entire back, and give room for substrate underneath.
