humidity 87%
humidity 87%
Hi! I have found a lot of info about raising humidity levels, but wanted to see if there is a "too high" level.
I have plastic over a screen lid and can easily remove some of the plastic if it is a problem. It seems to be running 87% over night and around 90% during the day...
Thank you!

Hi...I forgot to add my tank info stuff...
35g tank, MSW filtered pool, EE/sand substrate dampened with MSW, FW pool with no bubbler, lid is screen with plastic over most and a hood with two lights, one flourscent reptile light, one incandescent clear for added heat, UTH on back of tank above substrate, temps just barely 80 during the night and around 86 during the day. Calibrated digital hygrometers and thermometers.
Thank you!

High humidity is fine, mold is just more likely to grow.

Re: humidity 87%
My hygrometer reads 99% humidity constantly and I haven't had any issues. I haven't had my crabs very long but the one that isn't molting right now is quite active and happy and hardly even scared of me even though I've only had him 6 days now. I also haven't had any mold issues yet, aside from one piece of apple and a little moss before I put my crabs in. I just remove it and clean out their dishes and toss the moss as soon as I see anything. When I clean I leave the lid off so the tank can get some air flow. I've also read a thread on here saying vinegar is safe to spot treat mold in the tank

I have heard high humidity only becomes an issue if your heat is too high, as then it becomes difficult for them to breathe. Too much moisture can be an issue in that case. I had my humidity high ~ crabs were happy, no mold, but I dropped it to be on the safe side. I think it your humidity is fine as long as your temp stays in the safe zone.

Re: humidity 87%
Humidity can be 99% and not harm the crabs. They have modified gills and breathe the moisture in the air. If the humidity is too low, they can have gill damage, but there is no such thing as too high humidity.GotButterflies wrote:I have heard high humidity only becomes an issue if your heat is too high, as then it becomes difficult for them to breathe. Re: humidity 87%
Mine runs 90% in both tanks without ill effect.
Re: humidity 87%
Same here. Mine has been running at 99% with two very happy little apple-eating/ molting crabbies and very very little mold issuesmool wrote:Mine runs 90% in both tanks without ill effect.

Re: humidity 87%
This makes me feel so much better. Id been trying to find a way to vent my tank without getting to dry because my humidity is usually 90-99%.
Does anyone have any tips on keeping the tank glass from fogging up? Really sucks to not be able to see my lil crabbies.

Okay, that is good to know, thanks! I could have sworn I read/heard that it was more difficult for them. I won't worry about it anymore than! Thanks! I haven't had an issue with mold.soilentgringa wrote:Humidity can be 99% and not harm the crabs. They have modified gills and breathe the moisture in the air.
