False bottom question

Post by Eugooglizer » Thu Nov 06, 2014 6:44 pm

CrabbySquirrel wrote:Ok, so I just finished my false bottom, and when placing it into the tank, it shifts around a bit, meaning its not an exact fit....I did measure, several times, but the egg crate squares are so large, that when I test-placed it in the first time, it was just a bit too large, but then removing one more line made it a bit too small.

Did anyone else run across this? I'm not sure what can be done about it, either.....it's not like I can add anything onto the end, kwim? I just want to be done with this whole false bottom thing, LOL.....
Does the eggcrate rest on PVC supports? Is it too small in length or in width or both? I can think of several pretty simple solutions depending on how it's set up so far.
How's this for muchness?

The egg crate will sit on PVC, this was just a test-run. It looks like it's a bit too small now width-wise (in other words, I can move it forward and backward while I'm facing the tank). I guess what I'm concerned with is that substrate will leak down along the edges....

Has anyone gotten a "perfect fit" with their false bottom?

Yeah that was kind of what I was trying to suggest last night. If you have egg crate left over that can fill in the gaps that would work perfectly I think. And yes I think some have had sub fall through without any side effects. I can't remember where I read it but I'm pretty sure someone had a bit of their false bottom fall through in like a corner or something and it ended up being ok you're almost done with the worst part (imo)!!!

yeah might as well put some weed block under it since it's so easy, i found it at the dollar store..

and egg crate on the side, why i didn't think of that, to cover up that little gap around it, i do have little bits of sand and EE that have slipped through on the side, i can still see in/through it so its ok, but i'll have to think about that next time.

I agree the weed block is absolutely necessary to keep the sub from leaking in and the plastic canvas keeps the crabs from picking through the weed block :)
