Idea for large totes
Idea for large totes
I've been looking around online and I cannot find any clear totes bigger that 45 gallons so I had an idea. For people who own jumbos (or want alot of crab space) but cant afford a large tank and have no luck on craigslist, here's some thing you could try. You could buy a large tote and cut a large rectangle in front. Make it big because it will be the viewing area. After that order a large polycarbonate sheet and cut it to the same measurements of the hole. Put silicone around the edge of the hole then put the polycarbonate in. After it dries put silicone on the inside and outside of the tote and let it dry and that's it. I actually have not tried this this and wanted opinions.

Re: Idea for large totes
I'm building a tote for my crabs currently. The clear tote for the top isn't crystal clear like glass, but its clear enough that i can peek in and not bother them. I considered doing this, adding a window for viewing, but mine get stressed out when people are around so i'm probably not going to. It's a great idea though!

The only problem i see with this is a lot of sealants using for aquariums will not hold up well with plastic... the bond will effectively break.
If you're not looking for something watertight, a plexi sheet with holes drilled into it (and the tote) and being zip tied on could work well IMO... just its not gonna be water tight.

Yes, even that doesn't bond well to plastic and it will eventually come off..

Is there anything wrong with it not being water tight?

Nothing really. But it can also lead to the entire thing popping off, so to speak since the bond becomes so weak.Jenkinsgotclaws wrote:Is there anything wrong with it not being water tight?

I haven't set it up because we are moving soon, but all i need is sand. Everything else will come from my tank.
