Zilla Screen Cover with Hinged Door

Post by Crabinski » Wed Nov 12, 2014 6:55 pm

Does anyone have one of these Zilla Fresh Air Screen Covers with Hinged Door? If so, do you like it and would you recommend it?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VB ... em_1p_6_ti

I'm currently using a Zilla screen cover with a vertical center hinge on my mouse tank but am intrigued by the seeming convenience of accessing a tank via a centrally situated door. All reviews seem quite positive but no one has mentioned the size of the door, other than to say "hand-sized" or "food dish sized." As I'll need a new screen lid for the anticipated 30g 36L tank, I was thinking of the one with the door or the one with the full-length horizontal hinge (below).

If you have either one, I'd like to have your opinion.

I use these for my bearded dragon tanks and they are much more convenient then the lids that slide out/small opening lid that it sounds like you have.

I would definitely recommend!

All of mine are whole, no hinges or doors. It's a real pain, especially the one on the 75g. I would consider the hinged one if they make them big enough but really I hope to make a topper with front opening doors for that tank some day.

I'm leaning towards the one with the full horizontal hinge because the strip light fixture would fit nicely on the back portion, leaving full access to the tank by lifting up the front portion. The style with the door is really tempting but the door extends more than halfway back in the screen, not leaving enough room for the strip light. Whichever I opt for, I'll have to order online (either Amazon or HerpSupplies). It's very frustrating that these style screens are not available in stores where you could bring your own tape measure or at least give it a hands-on try for convenience :headshake: .

Petco sells the horizontal hinged doors. That's where I got mine. The ones at petco are actually a petco brand if you go to look for some

My Petco is at Riverview in Mesa and only has the "solid" screens. Where did you find yours? Any Petco in the East Valley?

The Petco at 44th and Thomas St in Phoenix and the one at Indian Bend and the 101 in Scottsdale has them. Those locations are where I got my 2 screens, but I also have the 40 gallon screens. So maybe the size you need does not bend...

Thanks! I'll check with those stores. If Petco doesn't make horizontal hinged screens for either 29g or 36" 30gs, I'll have to order online.

I don't know what size your tank is, but I just got a screen cover that's fully horizontally hinged for my 55 gallon tank. It measures 13" wide by 48" long, and I paid 19.99 for it from Dr's Foster and Smith. That's the largest size they have and for only 20 bucks, it's cheaper than I've found anywhere else.

Good to know, thanks. I've seen a lot of ads for Drs Foster and Smith but didn't know anyone who'd actually shopped there. As to what size tank I eventually end up with (29g or 30g 36"L version) depends on what deal I can find on Craig's List or which size goes on sale at Petco/PetSmart soon  .

I recently ordered a different lid from Amazon for my 55g. It showed up on my porch looking like a piece of trash. I literally wouldn't have known it was my lid except for the shipping label. I thought about having them send me a new one but then I saw this post. How did the shipping come out for you? Does it fit your tank nicely? Oh and how do the hinges work? Are you satisfied with them? Sorry for all the questions I'm just totally put out with the other company at this point (it's been two weeks and they still haven't responded to my requests or complaint).

Moonbeam, also check out HerpSupplies as their Zilla hinged screen lid for a 55g (48x13) is $17.99. Don't know what their shipping is, though.

thanks crabinski! Who knew ordering a lid could be so frustrating. ImageImage those lumps aren't just the box. That's the new curve of the lid.

ETA: does anyone know if an actual reptile store would possibly carry mesh lids for a 55g? I know petsmart doesn't and the lady I talked to from them said that most major chains don't sell mesh lids over 30-40g. I guess she could have been wrong but I'm all for supporting local businesses (assuming we have a reptile store here?) if possible.

My lid arrived within 3 business days of ordering, and it was in perfect condition. My laptop crapped out on me this last week or I'd post pics. The hinge seems to be fine, it's hinged all the way across the middle and I haven't noticed any difficulty with opening or closing it. There is a small amount of gap in the width between the sides of the lid and the size of my tank, but they also offer inexpensive lid clips to lock it in place, if necessary. (I did find one crab behind the toilet last week but he escaped from the old tank and I have NO clue how he managed to get there, but that's another tale).

I got free shipping because I ordered over $75.00 worth of product; I don't remember what their shipping rates are. The packaging was a long brown box, with the lid and full of packing peanuts. The lid itself was packaged inside another cardboard box and had not a scratch or dent on it.

I didn't know about the other site, so I'll have to check them out as well! I'm all about crabbing on a budget.

thank you! I am definitely looking into my options and will not be requesting the other company send me a replacement.

Side note (sort of). Has anyone ever ordered from a company called sea corals through Amazon or had to return something through Amazon? This is the first time I've ever sent something back and the return postage I received said I have to pay the return shipping. Is this an amazon thing or the other company? Also is this the norm? I kind of think it's ridiculous that the product and shipping showed up here in such horrible shape and now I have pay just to return it? I mean I'm guessing they'll refund the amount of the product itself but I don't want to pay for shipping something twice when the fault wasn't on my end.
