Upgrade! 40 Gallon Breeder :)

Post by DreaminginBlue » Sun Apr 02, 2017 7:41 pm

I just picked up a 40 gallon breeder aquarium and I can't wait to start working on it! I want to make it the ultimate hermit crab home... my little sister has dubbed the tank "Hermit Hollow" and she and I are super excited to make an awesome crabitat for our two Equadorians, Apollo and Pluto (she named them, LOL).
Any tips or advice on making it the very best it can be? I'm striving for a natural look, with lots of wood to climb on, fake plants to hide in, and a second level. Suggestions on how to do a second level would be much appreciated as well.
I'll post all progress on here.
:D

If your looking for a cheap second level I'd suggest a shower caddy.... however most things make a great second level, look around especially at Wal-Mart or those 2 dollar shops for great ideas.
Fake plants and vines are the best!

Thanks guys! I'll definitely check out some vines and shower caddies. Daws, that looks awesome! I love the little cave and the netting. :)

I'm tossing around so many ideas and I can't wait to just start doing/building/setting up... but alas, brainstorming must always come before all that.
Has anyone used this reptile climbing vines before? I mean ones that don't have leaves (though I plan on getting the ones with leaves and ones without). I think they'd be fun for the hermits to climb on, but I wasn't sure about their safety.
Also, what kind of suction cups work the best and where could I buy them? Petco had some but they were rather flimsy looking...

I have two of the jungle vines. (One in each crabitat). One is from when they first came out! So it is old! It's held up great. I recently purchased the other one, and wasn't impressed with how it was made. I noticed a lot of the material came off of it. My crabs are too big to sit on the vine. They hang from them. I got all of the loose stuff off of it and then put it in my crabitat.

I personally don't use suction cups in my crabitats. They don't work for me. I do have a few reptile branches that I purchased that attach with them, and those have stayed attached by some odd fluke. I use command strips, but I use the velcro like kind. They are for large picture hanging. So I buy the clips, and then use the velcro backs on them. :) Works for me, but to each's own :) Have fun decorating! :)

Forgot to update this... oops. Life has been crazy.
I put in the substrate a few days ago, will post pics soon. Ultratherm should come tomorrow, so then the crabbies can go in their new (albeit unfinished) home.
Pluto is digging everywhere in the 10 gallon and I'm sure he can't wait for even deeper sub and more room to tunnel. Apollo is more of a climber and as soon as possible I'm going to work on the second level for him. But little Pluto was being so cute earlier, he built a little cave up agaisnt the glass and was watching me study for a test. I kept getting distracted by how adorable he was and my poor history book must have felt very neglected until Pluto pushed dirt up against the glass ad I couldn't see him anymore. :hlol:
