Hermit Crab Feeder

Post by ErikRasmussen » Sun Sep 03, 2017 5:38 pm

Will this work? Are there any engineers out there who see flaws in this? (besides the model itself, its bad i know). Has anyone tried this yet?

I don't mind replacing food and water for them but sometimes i wish i didn't have to lift up the screen and let the humidity out, knock stuff around and what not. This idea, i think, would only work for custom tanks, like the ones made from old cabinets and would be super easy to manage. This one is the dry food one, the wet food dish is much simpler.

Basically a floating dish that is fed similar to a cat feeder.

The food storage bottle is on the outside of the tank with a tab that lifts or drops the angle of the dispenser.
Image
Push the tab down...

...and the gate closes

But with crabs they never eat the whole dish and since its so humid, the food gets moldy, even if it is dry food, sooo the bottom of the dish can get pulled aside to drop the food down a tube.
Image
The tube leads out of the tank and drops down into a wastebasket that you can throw out or dump into your compost.

On outside of the tank on the next wall you have your pulley that connects to the floor of the dish.

Everything would of course have to be made from crabby safe materials, i figure at the very least, wood with a silicone layering. it would also have to be sturdy enough to hold their weight and prevent them from wriggling out of the tank in any way. It would essentially be a part of the wall so cleaning could be an issue. The dish floor would also need a track to slide on to make sure it doesn't pop out. I could get creative with the outside latches and pulleys, but the hinge on the inside of the feeder where the dispensing slide is that would be tricky. Emptying and dispensing would have to happen when the crabs are not on top of it but I think the basic idea is sound, has anyone tried this yet? Is this totally outlandish?

I'd personally go with plexi, as its easier to clean than wood and a lot more resistant to moulding and the like... But yeah, it could work even for a glass tank if you get it cut.

I don't think I am going to buy a tank bigger than this. The next tank I upgrade to will be a custom one, probably in the style of the modified cabinet. I would really enjoy having doors, super deep substrate and just as much climbing room as there is running room so I wont worry about a glass tank. So this project is most likely a year or so out.

The plexi glass is probably what I will end up doing I imagine it sliding smoothly too, I considered PVC but a tank without plastics just sounds so nice lol

hahahaha thats okay it is totally one of my more absurd posts. The idea I was going for was a way to have a dry food dish that i could fill and empty without going into the tank. (the wet food one is a simpler design that i know will work)

For this one I would pull one lever to empty the tray, and another to refill it. I looked into cat feeders and some zoology feeders and some lab equipment to try to come up with something i could potentially put into a custom DIY tat. The first picture is of the inside of the tank, you can see the storage bottle (like a cat feeder) and the tray and the tube that leads to the outside of the tank once its emptied.

There are some photos of the back or outside of the tank (the tank being cardboard) where the storage bottle and emptying tube end up being

duno if this explanation helped or not

:hlol: The things we do for our crabs!!!!! :) Neat idea!

The one thing I would like to mention is we do want to open our crabitats on occasion to give them sufficient air exchange too :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Haha right? im such a nerd. And of course, and i always do spot clean ups and id have to wash the dish anyways. This would just make it so simple on those days when im in a rush out the door or when i have someone pet sit.

That now days shouldn't be a problem. With people using bubblers (and sometimes even fans) air exchange is already happening on all of our tanks. Even the lids aren't sealed 100%, also promoting gas exchange.
