Suggestions for backgrounds

Post by LandFishh » Sat Feb 09, 2019 1:29 pm

Ok, I'm so close to finishing the new crabitat with the fountain and large second level. I have a 4"x4" patch of glass that needs a background on it, as well as an 8"x4" patch. The rest of the tank is coconut climbing fiber background. I was thinking cork logs with air plants, but that might just be too tough. Any suggestions for basic, small(ish) backgrounds, besides coco fibers?

You can purchase backgrounds for aquariums at a store if that is what you choose to do, there are some VERY beautiful options available. But if you wish to go with a natural background I understand that as well :colors: Good luck with your crabbies!!!

Thanks! I'm thinking I'll use aquarium background for one of the two patches.

I have those aquarium backgrounds on both my tanks. One guy especiall kept trying to climb up the "tree" he saw from his log. He would try and try. I felt so bad I put some netting above the log and he and others climb up constantly. In my next tank (you know they'll be a next tank) I'm going to skip the background and just put netting along all the bare space.

I've been considered buying a background of some sort but I've heard that climbing backgrounds don't hold up well in humidity😱 Aquarium background would be cute tho😆Poor little crab with the fake-out tree.lol😂

Ok, I'm going over some plant options, but still not sure. I want something with runners/vines. I already have a pothos and it's holding up very well. I will prop the pot on the glass, but I still don't know what to plant.

I know. I felt really bad for him. He just kept sliding on the glass. I guess their depth perception isn't that great?

How do you all keep your climbing background on the tank? Mine came with adhesives but since I haven't finished the tank, I haven't introduced any moisture, and they're already peeling. I'm concerned that they won't stay up at all once I spray the tank. Anyways, what do you use for keeping your backgrounds up?

I believe the picture backgrounds should be on the outside of the tank. In the past I used command hooks and suction cups to attach the backgrounds. They would always knock the backgrounds off using that method or the hooks would come detached due to the humidity. I also found that the crabs would always sneak down the back side of the mat and the glass and get stuck, or just liked to annoy me.

I am in the process of using egg crate (lighting diffuser) material to attach shelves and the mats to in a new build. Since it is still under construction I can't saw how well it will work yet. So far everything seems as if it should be pretty good. I'm not sure how well the mat will hold up over 6 months but everything seems to be solid.
