Questions for snake people

Post by landlubber » Wed Dec 09, 2015 1:17 pm

We just got two ball pythons hatch-lings and I know very little about snakes, but I'm super excited to be a new snake mom (these are my H's-he wanted them so bad, along with a blind pitbull up for adoption through a friend who is a foster with the rescues around here, but I'm trying to hold out on that one). I was excited about making their new digs amazing, and thought DH and I could share some supplies back and forth (obviously well washed before). I have some left over EE which is already made, but I used some IO in the water to mix it up. Would the salt water hurt the snakes? It also has some sand mixed in, can pythons have sand as a substrate, or would sand in the EE harm them?

I'm a new bp owner myself, but I wouldn't think the salt water would hurt them... Personally I set my girl up with Reptibark with a good amount of EE mixed in to help with humidity. The only issue I can think of with using only EE is how well it holds humidity/moisture & that you don't want them sitting in moist substrate as it can cause scale rot. But I'm not sure how moist is too moist or how long it takes to affect them. If the mix is mostly sand like it is for crabs, I think I would use something else as sand is not a great substrate for almost any other animals.

I have a pastel BP that I got from an expo, I used cypress mulch at first but realized it wasn't for me. he would dig down to the bottom of the bin and get burned on the heat pad. I now use paper towels for his bedding. Fluffy (my BP) is now over 4 ft. long and 2 and a half inch in diameter but, I would like him fatter :? .
