Ignoring Wheel

Post by hermiwormi » Sat Aug 25, 2018 8:46 pm

I got that wheel I mentioned before, but I still need to attach the craft mesh. I even placed the crabs on it and left them alone to check it out. They walked a bit and then got off, leaving it alone.
Could it be due to the lack of craft mesh? The wheel does have grips on the inside of it, so there isn't a problem with them being unable to use it. They just don't, or either don't use it while I'm awake (hopefully).

Could they be using it late at night? Is there anything I can do to make it more enticing?

I wpuld add the mesh. It took my crabs a couple of months to discover it. I even put in some treats. That didn't work.

Out of all 6 of mine, only ONE actually uses it. The rest don't go near it. And it took him a month to find it as well, and he walks on it a decent amount, but as soon as i come around he climbs off.

At least they provide decent hiding spots underneath Image

I've tried putting food in once, and the one who did go on the wheel for the food dragged the food off.

The craft mesh helps too because you make it wider than the wheel. Hermit crabs spread their legs when they walk. Hermit crabs are nocturnal - so they could be using it at night.

Give it time. Some hermits are really shy. I would discourage you putting them in it. Let them find it on their own. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Our little guys absolutely love the wheel. We get 3 or 4 at a time trying to go different ways. Some hold onto the mesh and do loop de loops while other crabs spin it! It took them a few weeks to discover it.

Our bigger guys in a larger tank don't really mess with the wheel yet. On;y one of them I spied in it a few times. That tank has been set up for a little over a month now and 5 out of the 8 crabs we've had for about a month. Out of the 8 crabs I only see 2 or 3 are up, the rest have been down.

I would start by adding the craft mesh first. I made mine about an inch wider than the wheel. I even added a little mesh ramp up into the wheels so they can get in and out easier! I would let the wheel go for a few weeks after adding the mesh. If the crabs still don't use it I would try moving it to a quiet less visible area in the back of the tank. Some crabs are pretty shy and will avoid anything that may draw attention to their location, such as a big spinning wheel.
