My 20 gallon long

Post by Katastrawphique » Tue Nov 03, 2015 12:48 pm

I just got a cool new skull ornament for my hermit crab tank so I decided to take some pictures and I thought why not share them with you guys. My tank is a 20 gallon long and I have four crabs living in there. Soon (hopefully in the next two weeks) I will get a bigger tank for them, a 40 gallon breeder and I'll be posting pictures of that too once it's ready. I'm planning on doing a pirate theme! I bought the skull from Walmart and I also ordered a ship wheel ornament off Amazon. But I guess I'm getting ahead of myself as two of my crabbies have just buried themselves so I can't even start this project until they come back up. So, in the meantime, here is my current setup:

(I know I need more substrate for them, it's not as deep as I'd like)

Love that skull and the idea of a pirate theme! I've never seen anything that cool at Walmart unless I'm looking in the wrong place -- did you find it in the aquarium section or was it in the general Halloween area?

It was in the aquarium section, but they were all out of order and it was hiding in the back. I couldn't even find the price tag for it, I had to go find one of those price scanners to find out how much it cost. But I'm sure it was an actual aquarium ornament because it's made of high quality material and there's a hole in the back where fish can swim through.

Thanks! I usually only peruse the Aquarium section at my nearest Walmart but guess I'll have to start scoping out the other Walmarts in the area, too.

Looks awesome! Loving the theme as well.

We have the skulls at the Walmart closest to me too, but they have 3 different sizes and 2 different colours to choose from when they get in new shipments!

Looks cool! I just have a couple of quick questions....what is the Orange jello looking stuff? Also...are those shells the only water you offer?

The "jello looking stuff" is persimmon and yes the shells are their only current source of water but they are deep enough for the crabs to get most of their bodies in there. I know crabs sometimes like to fully submerge which is why I alternate between the shell dishes and little tupperware containers when I do my deep clean and decor change. I didn't want the tupperware in there this time because they don't look as nice and, more importantly, they take up too much room (which is part of the reason I want to upgrade).

Please don't take this wrong but the way a crabitat looks does not take precedent over health of your crabs. I know you want to do the best for your crabs so please provide better water dishes at all times.I recall trying to use shells for water many years ago at age 13 and found the water does not stay in the shell. The water leaks out or is wicked out by the substrate, therefore you will notice you are constantly filling it. Shells look nice but do not work well for food or water because they are lightweight and can be turned over easily just by the crab digging under or walking through it.I have a 20l and use large water dishes with no problem.Would it be possible to remove the giant skull that is taking up space with no real purpose other than looks? You could look around the house for any kind of sturdy deep plastic dishes.Hope I did not offend just trying to help. How much room will the ship wheel decor take up?

Hmm. I've never had a problem with water leaking out of the shells or the dishes being turned over by crabs. I've only had to refill it when it got dirty because of sand and food particles. My crabs never seem to "rearrange" their crabitat at all, although I think that's about to change because my newest crab was turning everything over in his ISO tank. Anyway, I was planning on buying some natural looking deep water dishes meant for reptiles for the new tank but I get paid tomorrow so I will get them now instead. They even come with built in steps to help the crabs climb out. The ship wheel is quite small so it will take up hardly any room. I used to have another ship wheel and, before it broke, they absolutely loved to climb on it. All three of them would hang out on it together. They always seem to choose on spot in the tank where they congregate.
